Motorcycle News from the UK has been the first to break some details and pictures of the 2009 CBR600RR and CBR1000RR. The surprising news is that both bikes will get Honda's brand new motorcycle ABS system.
The new Combined Braking System was unveiled to the world a few months ago on a prototype 600RR. The CBS operates both the front and rear brake and uses the ECU to calculate the braking force to apply without locking either wheel.
It's a surprise that Honda is rolling out the new system on both of its supersport bikes so soon after revealing the prototype. Such must be their confidence with the system.
For 2009 the CBR1000RR shouldn't be changing much other than the addition of ABS and some new colors (including everyone's favorite, the Repsol replica paint scheme). The 600RR however is due for it's MMC.
Usually Honda removes some weight with the supersport MMC's but with the small increase in weight with the ABS system there may be little net change. Look for the typical incremental performance enhancements, but don't hold your breath for a slipper clutch.
Maybe if Honda is feeling really ambitious the slipper clutch will be under the Christmas tree as well but my guess is that it probably won't be, given the extra expense of the ABS. Then again, the 600RR is now the only Japanese 600 that doesn't have one.
