Zero-emission automobile helps front-runners breathe easier
Los Angeles, Calif. 02/28/2003 -- The hydrogen-powered Honda FCX, the first and only fuel cell vehicle certified by the U.S. EPA for every day commercial use, will be the official men's timing vehicle for the 18th running of the City of Los Angeles Marathon presented by Honda on Sunday, March 2, 2003.
The FCX demonstrates Honda's commitment to producing zero emission automotive technology and the company's overall commitment to the environment. The FCX combines hydrogen and air in a "fuel cell stack" to create electricity, which in turn powers an electric motor that drives the car. The only emission to the process is water and heat, eliminating the exhaust fumes normally generated by an internal combustion engine. The city of Los Angeles mayor's office became the first commercial fleet customer for a fuel cell vehicle, taking delivery of the first of five FCX vehicles in December.
Hydrogen-powered vehicles can eventually offer a practical solution to the problem of automotive pollution while reducing the world's dependence on oil. The Honda FCX demonstrates that a hydrogen-powered vehicle can achieve practicality similar to today's cars. Two key areas that Honda is working to solve area lowering the cost of the technology and creating a practical hydrogen fueling infrastructure.
