Takeo Fukui: A V-8 Is A Possibility

In a Reuters report, Takeo Fukui has been quoted as saying that Honda may begin mass producing V8 engines, but also that a final decision won't be made for around 3 years. Fukui also said that Honda is considering diesel and/or hybrid V-6 options as well.

Judging by the Reuters piece, Mr. Fukui seemed to place the most emphasis on the V8 possiblity, mentioning that if development of the recently announced V10 is successful, there would be "no reason not to have something in between". And further: "If we make a V10, we might just as well make a V8. I won't deny the possibility." "We'll see how the V10 turns out, and make a decision in about three years' time." He also reasoned "by around 2010, customers driving the Ridgeline now will need a stepped up product".

Given Mr. Fukui's style and all of the rumors we've been hearing of V8 and V6 diesel development work, this story isn't exactly a huge surprise. We've recently heard from industry sources that work is already underway with a Ridgeline test mule having been fitted with a V8. Supposedly the V8 that's in this Ridgeline is actually a competitor's drivetrain and at this point in the development stage Honda engineers are simply gathering data on the vehicle's dynamics with the heavier drivetrain, so that they may develop an optimal platform for the next generation Ridgeline. Industry sources have also indicated that though Mr. Fukui has stated that Honda will make a decision in 3 years, the V8 has pretty much been greenlighted already and it will first appear in the RL/Legend. Of course by saying they won't make a final decision for 3 years, Honda seems to be hedging in case they decide to suddenly take an alternate route. A Honda V8 would be expected to displace around 4.0-4.4 liters for sedan duty and perhaps more for the Ridgeline. It would also be a pretty safe bet to assume that the motor will feature Honda's VCM cylinder-cut technology and their latest VTEC wizardry.
