Peter Lyon of Forbes has published an item of interest today, stating that Acura will reveal a Type R variant of the NSX at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.
We had heard rumors all along during the NSX's development that Acura had planned to release updates over the course of the NSX's life, including a Type R and even a Spyder version. So far, since the NSX launched nearly 3 years ago, we've seen a mild refresh for the 2019 model year with some chassis revisions. Sales have been sluggish for the NSX, despite its formidable yet approachable performance and (to our eyes, at least) stunning exterior design.
According to the Forbes article, the NSX will be notched up to 650hp while adding a "stiffer uprated suspension and stabilizers and bigger carbon-ceramic brakes while the coupe will be fitted with aeroparts like a rear wing and front splitter inspired by Honda’s NSX-GT race car".
One rumor (posted in our forums) suggests that the Type R will lose the front electric motors, while the twin turbocharged V6 engine will be upgraded to over 600hp. The ~50ps electric motor that's located in the 9-speed DCT will remain.
