Another S2000 Successor Rumored

 Source: Autocar UK
 Credibility Rating: Not Specified

In a story published earlier today on Autocar UK, they are claiming that sources have indicated to them that Honda has changed their future sportscar plans yet again.

There have been so many Honda "future sportscar" rumors sloshing around the Japanese auto media over the past 18-24 months, at one point we were considering making a chart in an attempt to make sense of them. But the fact that there were so many different models rumored to have been in the works made it seem unlikely that they would all materialize on the street. In short, we had S1000 (MR), S1500 (FR), S2000 (MR, possibly AWD, possibly Hybrid), as well as "baby NSX" (which may or may not have been the same thing as the "S2000") rumors.

We don't know if there's anything to AutoCar's report of today, but it does seem to make a bit more sense than pretty much everything else we've been hearing. This car would generally follow the formula of the original S2000 - front-engine, rear wheel drive, open top. There are some renderings which appear to wrap the NSX's face around the front of a vehicle that looks much like the original S2000, and an NSXish rear end. It's not clear if this rendering comes from "inside info" or if Autocar simply decided to see how the NSX mug would look on an S2000.

It sounds like this car is still in the early research stage, as Autocar says Honda has a number of engines under consideration, ranging from a 1.5T to a hotter 2.0L Turbo based upon the Civic Type R's 306hp 2.0L.

We will try to find out if there are any legs to this new rumor. We hope there are, but it seems to be pretty far out on the horizon and we all know how quickly things can change from the company leadership with respect to these things.
