Advantages over CR-V? [View News Item]    (Score: 1, Normal) 11-24-2018 11:30

With my 2016 CR-V lease expiring in June (I also have a 2018 CR-V), I have/had high hopes for this vehicle.

But the more I read and think about it, I'm wondering what the advantages over the CR-V will be.

Leg room? Probably not, since the current CR-V has about two inches more rear legroom than the Pilot has in its second row. I can't imagine they'd move the second row back more than two inches, so if anything, the Passport will equal the CR-V in that department.

Cargo space? Obviously a Pilot with the third row folded down has a big advantage, but the CR-V has about the same cargo space as larger five-seaters like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Edge, and more cargo space than the Nissan Murano and Hyundai Santa Fe.

Performance? Probably not much of an advantage, because the bigger engine powers a heavier vehicle.

So what are we looking... more hip room? That's about all I can think of at the moment.

Am I being cynical here?

More off-road prowess as the Passport looks to be engineered to handle it better.

I have a '17 CRV as well and I love it. I can't wait to see the Passport however, because if I do get one, I'll be trading my CRV.

Something tells me to wait until this time next year to see the refreshed 2020 CRV as they'll probably offer a Hybrid variant.

Well performance - letís look at the Pilot and transpose what it can do to the Passport:

Ohers can comment better on the capability of what is essentially SHAWD vs the more basic AWD system in the CRV but itís definitely advantage Pilot.

The Pilot is a LOT faster. Itís been tested at 6 seconds to 60 with the 9AT. The CRV Touring has been tested at 7.5 seconds to 60. That is a marked and significant difference.

The Pilot AWD can tow 5,000 lbs vs the 1500 lbs of the Pilot. That is another significant difference.

I think itís fair to say that the Passport will offer several significant performance bumps over the CRV in terms of off-road capability, straight line/passing speed, and towing.

Cargo:

The CRV has 39.2 cubic feet behind the second row.

The Pilot either has 46.8 or 55.9. Honda lists two measurements based upon two different standards for measuring - they donít say what standard is used in the CR-V. But the Pilot is definitely bigger by either 20% or 40%. Iím guessing the Passport will be somewhere between 15-30% bigger in the back.

I think 15% qualifies as a significant difference and 30% definitely does.

It will likely offer the same advantages that other midsized SUVs offer over compact SUVS.

There's a market for vehicles like the Edge, Santa Fe, Murano, etc. even though, in my opinion, they don't really offer anything that I would want/need that I can't already get in a less expensive and more efficient vehicle like an Escape, Tucson or Rogue.

A lot of people like the extra space (even if it is negligible) and larger engine. Having a V6 will be a big draw for some shoppers, Not everyone, myself included, trusts a turbo 4 in a large vehicle.

Vehicles in this class also offer a bit of exclusivity. It seems that every other car on the road is a CR-V, Escape or similar. An Edge, Santa Fe, Murano and Pilot will stand out more. That goes a long way with some people.

I think that the Passport will be a success, though I do see it stealing sales from the CR-V (good for Honda) and Pilot (not so good).

It is one niche that Honda will have a vehicle where Toyota doesn't, which I think is a good thing.

It'll be hard to top the CRV but I hope it does good.

I heard it'll have a 9spd., V6 from the Pilot. I hope it is good on gas but probably the same as the Pilot as well.

I'm looking forward to the reveal and hope we get solid details of the specs not just a piece of theatre. Edmunds makes an easy car comparison.

I think I said in another thread that Honda is leaving easy sales and money on the table if they simply added a 2.0T to the CR-V's options list. Apparently, Honda decided to go another way and decided to chop a couple of inches from the middle of a Pilot instead.
