An Ariel Atom is the only car to ever physically hurt me. We did one with a supercharged K20 that made about 450 whp. Did some street tuning on it at the track after they messed up some stuff. Had a wideband O2 gauge taped to the dash with duct tape. Driver hit the gas in _4th_ gear at 40 mph and it accelerated so hard the gauge flew off the dash and bruised my chest pretty badly.

And we've done some making 600+ whp……

That's a pretty much perfect match for that car. I literally saw one only a few days ago and drooled.
Nearly bought one a few years ago and have regretted it ever since !

They can't be road licensed in Aussie land unfortunately. :( Mad to have one as a weekend runabout!

Someone had one up at our local track as a dedicated track car, but I only saw it at a couple of track events, and I think it wasn't particularly fast in his hands....... According to motoring scribes it was a bit "iffy" in less experienced hands - what is your opinion Shawn??

Yes indeed - my (secondhand) understanding is that they're addictive, but rather a difficult learning curve.

Probably as close to anyone could get to a F1 car and they make the early S2000 look like a real pussycat.

Their secondhand values are nuts ! Great investment though. I had a two stroke Kart with a bent chassis that shared its skittish handling ...

F1 cars has wings to aid high speed turning, Atoms only has holy spirit helping you on high speed turns. If I'm not mistaken, other than mechanical grip, you have only your driving skill and insurance premium separating you between life and death on the car.

Anyone tracking them must opt for both the front and rear wings. The 450 whp example I referenced was slower than a stock 997 GT3 around a fast track because it had no front wing and would thus understeer quite a bit (because the rear wing was there to keep the rear planted). It had enough acceleration that over small rises and crests it would pull the front wheels off the ground.

The Pistonheads article on it says :
As the first Atom to get full European Series Type Approval (ESSTA) and Australian Design Rules (ADR), the Atom 4 can be sold throughout Europe and Australasia, while it will also be built under licence by Ariel North America, based in Virginia, for both north and south American markets.

I'm pretty sure they got the Integra Type-R/Civic Type-R version of the engine with 225HP. And then of course, with the supercharger, they were way above that.
