I purchased a HondaCare plan for 8 years and 120,000 miles. The same one I had on my 2006 Civic Si.

The dealer I bought the car from wanted $5000 for it, I thought that was really cheap so I got it!!!

Kidding. I bought it from College Hills Honda for $1110, fantastic people!

Be careful modding the car. The aftermarket warranty guys are looking much more closely for modifications these days when covering major (engine/trans) repairs.

Even in stock form, Honda is looking for every excuse to reject warranty repairs.

I have read all kinds of nightmare stories over in Civic X. The dealers typical answer is something along the lines of ďDruver abuse because itís a Type RĒ. Written on paper.

I've always been curious about the utility of this insurance. If it is an extension of 3/36k then presumably, you still pay for routine maintenance?

I have been owning Hondas since 1985 and outside of routine maintenance, I have not spent $1100 on any of them by the time I've driven 120k miles.

My 2002 Odyssey had the transmission replaced after about 80k miles, but that was paid for by Honda. At some point well over 120k miles, I had to replace the fuel pump which cost me around $700. Haven't had anywhere near similar expenditures on a Honda with less than 120k miles on it.

I never buy any extended warranties. From everything I've read they are not good value for money. I'd be curious if any TOVers think they've spent over $1100 on their Honda vehicles (besides routine maintenance) during the first 120k miles.

Look, I understand everybody has a different risk tolerance level and I am not questioning your purchase. I am simply hoping other TOVers can share their experiences in this area.

Yep. 98 Accord EX-L 4 cyl trans went at 108k miles and Honda told me to take a hike even though there were issues with the trans in those cars...just not my VIN, how convenient. Had it serviced just enough ($1200, I think) to get it to last another year or year and a half, and then traded for $500 on an 08 Civic Si.

Another one, 2001 Honda Civic LX Coupe trans went at 80k miles and Honda again said take a hike and/or wanted about $3k to replace. Bought trans for about $1800 and had mechanic friend install for almost nothing. I won't get into how awful the brakes/suspension life were on this vehicle, but you can decide yourself how much you'd like to add to the $1800 bill for these items.

04 Acura TL, father had issues with the trans at 74k miles and Acura basically did nothing and he traded the car before it went. My dad was a car guy and worked at dealerships in his younger days, so I'm confident he knew what he was talking about.

Overall, most of the Honda's/Acura's I've had have been reliable, especially my 88 Accord LX-i that was pretty much bulletproof with major components to almost 300k miles, but they aren't quite as good as they used to be, IMO. I do agree that 95% of the time warranties only pan out for the insurer, but that's a damn good deal garoto got on the HondaCare and I probably would go for that one, even though I normally turn down warranty offers.

You make some very valid points. I agree, everyone's situation (risk & money factors) is different. For me, this car has some new tech that I'm on the fence on in regards to their functionality over the long haul. I no longer buy domestic cars bc I've been burned badly by issues while not covered by warranty & still making payments. That's happened to me with Hondas as well, but not nearly to the same extent.

So my $600 spent on 7yrs/80k buys me peace of mind. I'm guessing a failure to the 3 mode suspension (that I play with everyday) will more than pay for this warranty after 3yr/36k.

I'm one of those guys that waited 20 years for the next opportunity to buy a CTR which has aged me well past the type of driving I may have done back in the day. Honda will lose me as a customer if I'm denied a claim due to a Mechanical failure that's been stereotyped as a "type r and therefor driven in an abusive way." That happened to me with my 2002 ep3 si when one of the motor mounts broke... They said it "was driven hard bc it was an si". What gave it away?...the babyseat in the back or those 9 second sprints to 60?. Please...

The fact that Honda still has a 3/36 warranty says a lot about their reliability. We have been driving Honda's since 1984 and may not have had any warranty items during the first 3 years on any of them. The dealer replaced the automatic transmission in our current 2000 Accord when it was 7 years old, at no cost.

$1110 for 8yrs./120K Honda Care does sound like a pretty good deal for peace of mind, though.

Hereís something important, you can only get it for this price during the first 6000 miles I believe. After that itís a shit show.

Itís also refundable. I had it on my CR-V, had zero issues with the car for 19,000 miles. Got a refund for $980 which I then used on the CTR.

If the infotainment system display goes bad, the tach/speedo digital display, that alone covers it. Thereís also the electronic hand brake, the automatic steering wheel lock, the three mode suspension, and turbo assembly.

To me, if any of these items go bad, and at least one of them will, the $1110 will more than certainly pay off for themselves.

I've purchased the extended warranty on my last two cars. For me it's worth the peace of mind, especially with the increase in standard gadgets on the newer models. My 2008 Accord had a door lock actuator fail very close to the 120k mark. IIRC, I think it would have been
$260.00 out of pocket. Yes, it would have been cheaper to have paid that compared to what the warranty cost, but again it's the peace of mind. I guess you can call it a mental thing, but you really don't miss that one grand when you're paying up front, but having a "surprise" repair bill kinda sucks. Good thing is that if you decide later that you don't want the warranty anymore, you can get a refund for the prorated amount.

All truths. Probably related to the dealers association in some deep dark method. Dealers also do sell real HondaCare at a high premium. The $5000 dollar one, true story.

Several unscrupulous dealers sell off-brand 3rd party service contracts as HondaCare. These "non-HondaCare HondaCares" are almost pure profit for the dealership...because these 3rd party companies do not plan on paying any claims.

They typically claim bankruptcy after a while, to ensure they have to pay no claims.

So how can you tell the difference? The Honda logo is on one and not the other?

Yeah. The small print, the paper you sign, etc. it clearly says HondaCare and mentions that itís part of Honda Financial Services and so on. HondaCare is a very specific thing.

Have bought extended on last 7 Hondas since 2005. I always get longest one with zero deductible. Purchase from Saccucci Honda, huge volume R.I. dealer. Last one for 2017 Type R, 8 year/120,000, zero deductible for $1,110.
I have had very few claims, but cars are so complex now, and Honda dealers are like all others, in that they get that look of glee when they say "Sorry, but you are out of warranty, and it will cost this much".
For peace of mind, get them. The big bonus, is when you sell them to another private owner, with 1-3 years left of warranty, it is transferrable for $50 to the 2nd owner. It is a HUGE selling point. Have sold last 6 Hondas on Autotrader. Average time is 2 weeks, cost is $75 until it sells. Have sold all for average of $4,500 more than the "trade in scam". Always sell outright. Take the used car profit away from the dealer.
My opinion: Buy it!

I extended my warranty to 7yr/130000km for I believe CAD$1300. The original price ($1800 I think) of the warranty for the CTR is the same as a regular Civic LX. Given that the CTR is quite a bit different mechanically than a Civic LX, I thought it's not bad of an idea to get it. It also seems "easier" to spend another $1300 on a $42k car vs $1300 on a $20k Civic LX.

And ya, I wouldn't rule out selling the CTR before the extended warranty expires, I'd imagine the next owner of my Type R would appreciate the warranty.
