2009 Acura TSX 6MT Dyno Test

When Acura released the specs for the 2009 TSX, the collective groans from enthusiasts were nearly deafening. Trading 4 peak horsepower for "only" 8 additional lb-ft of torque wasn't enough to subdue the moaning, but perhaps the results of our first Dynojet chassis dyno test will help. As you can see in the plot below, the new TSX's K24Z3 makes more torque everywhere in the rev band below 6000 rpms, and in some places, substantially more torque. At 162lb-ft, the K24Z3's peak torque is more than 12lb-ft ahead of the K24A2. Above 6000 rpm, the older K24A2 makes slightly more torque (and thus, more horsepower), but as you can see, the advantage is negligible, with the K24Z3's 179.6hp falling short of the K24A2's peak horsepower by a pony count of less than 2. It's difficult to determine with any degree of certainty, but from the dyno plots it appears that the K24Z3's VTEC transition point has been moved down to around 5000 rpms, compared to the artificially high 6000 rpm switch point that the K24A2 used. Obviously, this lowered VTEC switch point plays a role in the additional midrange torque, but clearly there have been other optimizations as well. It's not clear why these optimizations didn't equally impact the performance on the high-rpm lobes, but maybe Honda's holding off on a hotter high-rpm profile for marketing reasons.

Bear in mind that this car is quite green, with only 122 miles on the ticker at the time of our dyno test. It wouldn't surprise me if we see broken-in stock examples of the 2009 TSX making 185 wheel horsepower or more at some point down the road.
