Introduction
At the Temple of VTEC, we've generally focused most of our attention towards the high-performance end of the Honda/Acura model spectrum. With this practice, the intention hasn't been to slight other vehicles in the lineup, it's simply due to the fact that we mostly own the sportier models. In the interest of providing better coverage of the entire lineup of Honda and Acura automobiles, we are going to start testing models from across the range. To kick off this endeavor, I requested a 2002 CR-V from Honda, and they graciously obliged. A shiny Eternal Blue Pearl EX 5-speed was delivered, and during the course of a week I drove it over 500 miles.

With over a half million CR-Vs sold since its U.S. introduction in the 1997 model year, Honda should be pretty satisfied with the success of its entry level sport-ute. The first generation Civic-based mini-ute offered a combination of rugged styling, interior roominess, nimble handling, and thriftiness that endeared it to many. For 2002, Honda engineers have improved upon the formula without losing sight of what brought success to the CR-V in the first place. Power/torque, interior room, and overall refinement have improved, without sacrificing its compact exterior dimensions or fuel economy.
