Z.Speed Cam Sprockets Review

by Dan Ponze

Well, I originally had Z-Speed cam sprockets installed on my 1995 GS-R when I got my DPR stage VI work back. I bought them from DPR at a great price and seemed fine for a little while. Later on I found out that these
sprockets had slipped a tooth on both intake and exhaust sides. I fixed them and tried them again. Again they slipped. I called DPR to complain as they had recommended and sold them to me. Dan immediately apologized and sent out a pair of his sprockets (which weren't available at the time of the headwork) and told me to simply send the Z-Speed's back which I did. Now that's customer service! I must say that DPR's service and help has been beyond anything I ever expected and is among the best in the business. Upon inspection of the old ones I noticed that one had more rounded edges on the outer teeth than the other and that they were not even close to the quality of the DPR's. The DPR units have a nice blue anodized finish on the center portion and unlike any other cam sprocket on the market (that I've seen) have a steel insert where the bolts screw into. This is because over time, the aluminum will weaken and eventually break from all the screwing and unscrewing. This won't happen on the DPR cam sprockets. The bolts are of high quality and the outer teeth have nice shape with none of the rounded corners that the Z-Speed ones did. I would recommend these sprockets highly since slipping sprockets is not only bad for power but a real pain and potentially dangerous to the motor.
