Although the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course has been good to RealTime Racing driver Peter Cunningham over the years, with one SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge series win and five more in other series, this was a weekend to forget for the RTR team.
Peter finished seventh in the 50-minute GT class race on the winding road course, 18.948 seconds out of the win. He is now second in the Driver's Championship points, and Acura fell from the Manufacturer's Championship points lead to third place.
Peter qualified the RTR Acura NSX SC fifth fastest, 1.3 seconds off the pole. Defending GT Champion Michael Galati and his Audi S4 Competition won his third pole in four races this season, with a pair of Porsches and a BMW taking the other top three spots.
On a track where passing places are at a premium, the first three cars on the starting grid never changed their order in the race from the drop of the green flag until the event was checkered.
Peter did pass the BMW M3 of Jeff McMillin for fourth spot on lap 20 when he caught him off-guard on the race's only re-start after a full-course yellow, but it was apparent the performance of the NSX was not equal to the BMW's and he was re-passed on lap 23.
Then, with one lap to go, the NSX suffered a fuel injection misfire, and two more cars got by Peter at the end of the back straight, dropping him to seventh place.
"The good news is we will now drop 40 pounds of our R.E.W.A.R.D.S. weight, and the people who beat us today will add some. The even better news is that this weekend's race at Road America is our home track, and that will give us even more inspiration to do well in front of our fans and sponsors."
Galati's win, combined with Peter's seventh place finish, has Galati in an 11-point lead for the championship, but with six races to go, the championship is still wide-open.
Mid-Ohio's SPEED GT class race will be televised on the SPEED Channel, Saturday, July 13, at 9 p.m. EST.
