You mean USB mass storage mode? Go to settings --> SD card and phone storage --> check "mass storage only"

Make sure you use a good cable too, some cables won't work if they're low quality.

So this will allow me to play music off of my Droid through the USB in the car? Such as Pendora..............

doing that will make the phone act like a usb stick so i'm guessing no to pandora. your car doesn't have an auxilary jack?

It will let you play music saved on the phone itself, but you'll still need the Aux cable to play music from pandora :/

In the Acura's once you have bluetooth paired, you start Pandora on the phone then hit the USB/Aux until BT Audio, and then it will stream.

What's the quality of that audio, though? When loading the Droid as USB is plays my CD quality WAV files.

|
Simple:
(1) You can plug the Droid into the USB "iPod" connection. Turn on the stereo and the Droid will prompt you to enable the USB share. Then select AUX (I think that's it) from the stereo and you'll see the file folders (directories) in the Droid. Step into where you put your music files and hit play. In this case the Droid is just a "USB stick" and the music player is the car stereo. I think this is the highest quality to play music..
(2) Alternatively, someone else noted that on Bluetooth you can share the audio from audio players in the Droid. In this case the Droid is the music player. The Bluetooth interface is the waypoint.. I have not done this but I suspect the audio quality will be worse since Bluetooth is bit rate (audio sampling rate ), and I suspect also frequency (bandwidth), limited.

I don't know if I'm off here or not, I want to say I am but this may help.
Before I start, Driod OS is very fragmented, I don't know if all Droid devices will behave the same way, however, since this seems like a low-level software/firmware algorithms, chances are all Droids behave this way,
I don't own a droid, but I've help someone set things up in a similar scenario as you're describing. As Tony said, when you plug in the droid to the USB interface, the droid goes into disk-mode, where the droid is nothing but a flash storage devices, in this case, one that stores your music. The stereo unit reads this storage device (your droid), and it displays the music files (if they're in a compatible format), and you play them through your stereo. The player is the stereo, but the files are always stored in the Droid, so obviously do not unplug that.
I'm sure you know this, but the aux cable simply makes the car speakers become some huge headphones.
Now a third way, is through bluetooth streaming. Although the quality is lower, only audiophiles will notice this. I have a Kensington LiquidAux Bluetooth receiver in my car, the best piece of device of that kind I've ever owned (they're discontinued now), and I love the quality, and its the easiest setup because I don't plug anything in, I just hit play on the remote control of the device and it automatically plays whatever is on my iphone, one click. I can also grab my iPhone and choose what I want to play.
It is much easier to use your phone as the player beause the User interface is better suited for browsing through songs, artists and albums than the car's usb unit is. The car's usb unit can be distracting if they try to choose a song through that crappy interface. Now, you can argue that using a phone while driving can be more dangerous, and it is. However, the remote control attaches to my door panel (in my case), and it is just like any other button in my cars dash.
Additionally, if you go to www.proclipusa.com, you can clip your phone very sturdily, and cleanly and your phone simply becomes more buttons as part of your dash, so it is not any more distracting than your car's dash is.
The bluetooth route is the way to go, and if I was a car salesman, I could definitely prove to customers why that is, and teach them to enjoy that feature.
Hope this helps, good luck. If you want more details on anything regarding what I've said here; like pictures, just let me know.

Yeah, you know, that's what I dislike about androids, personally and technically. Not only is it fragmented between companies and devices, but within the company and the device itself. You would expect the company to ensure compatibility with accessories consistenly across updates and across platforms, with changes happening only forward (adding newer devices), not trimming code while also removing compatibility with older devices. In other words, while you can rely on android "as is" you can't trust that what works today will work tomorrow,or what worked on one phone and accessories will work with another.
For the op, this is tough, because consumers genreally aren't educated enough with these topics and two things can happen:
1. the blame will go to the op (salesman) if he can't answer their question or get the device to work, and her device later works for reasons beyond the ops control or the car itself, but rather due to the OS.
2. The blame will go the car if things don't work, and the praise comes to android if things later work, when in reality it should have just worked initially.

The thing is... why bother at all with the Droid? Why not just plug in a real USB stick.
Or, in our Civic based NAVIs we can also plug in a flash card.... So, in reality, why bother with the Droid at all? Keep the Droid for what it is.. a very nice internet/phone appliance.
As a matter of fact, I carry both my Droid and old 64GB iPod to work. The iPod trounces the Droid in sound quality and storage (I store my audio files in 16/44.1 "CD quality" WAV files so I can only store around 120 records (yep I record my LPs) in my iPod. The Droid, with only 12GB, can not store nearly as much and sucks very badly sonically.
On a recent drive to Seattle, I kept the Droid up on the windshield as an auxiliary NAVI and the iPod in the glove box. Worked great for us.

In my tl, there does not appear to be a difference in sound quality from playing mp3s at 320kbps(?) when playing from either usb or bluetooth. Bluetooth does occasionally stutter, probably due to connection?

You play 320KPS MP3 in your TL?
What a waste.
I used to make my own downrezzed CD-Rs from my LP recordings. The stereo in the TL is OUTSTANDING. Dump the MP3 and at least move up to uncompressed WAV, then you'll hear the difference.
Too bad DVD-A didn't catch on. I was planning to start cutting my own from the raw 24-96 recordings.

Naw.. those are the "Hi End Fetish" audiophiles.
I do have good cables, because I can hear the difference in a good way. They were not cheap, but since I bought most of them used I paid nowhere that. Currently I think I'm going to start making my own cables from scratch.. I think I'll try with a single silver and two copper strands like Kimber KACG but a much lower cost.
It is true that 3500 cables do sound "different" because of capacitance, reactance, etc... but do they sound "better"?
Some folks with money think so. So good for them. I won't ridicule them because the truth is that as an audio system gets better, the difference in sound between components becomes obvious.
What I can not stand is people with crappy sounding system criticizing those that have systems of "high resolution".
People in Yugos do not pass judgment on people with Ferraris.
So people with Bose should not pass judgment with those with real stereos.

You can not differentiate the sound quality of a lossy 256kbps VBR and a Lossless 1000+kbps file in a car stereo.
Try playing those two different qualities in a high-end $$$ surround system, and you'll understand why 10MB per song is much less than 90MB per song.
With regards to cable, somo do sound better than others, and are more expensive too. In other cases, some are simply "different" than others: and yes I do hear the difference, but that does not mean that it is better, it is simply different (like you mentioned TonyE).

Have you listened to a TL's ELS stereo system?
I used to own an 04 TL. Played with the stereo a lot. I ended up preferring the sound of CD-Rs over everything else -except for the demo DVD-A which was astonishing....
I would agree that in my Civic Hybrid you can not tell the difference... but this discussion is about a TL.
