We have a 2003 Odyssey EX. We have never had any trouble with the transmission. We did have to replace the back window motors and the auto doors stick occasionally, but it has been a great car and my family has taken some wonderful vacations in it.

My question, how has the new 6sp auto been holding up? I know Honda has some growing pains with its auto trannies with V6's. We are looking to upgrade our Odyssey with a new one, but I wanted to see if anyone had any experience with the new one.

Thanks!

Noone will have driven it enough to have a reliability data point for you, but two things to consider: 1. Honda has paid dearly for it's transmission faults and not likely to f it up again, 2. the 6-speed is in the MDX, if it's good enough for the MDX, likely to handle the Ody.

My only worry is that there is some interaction between the cylinder deactivation system (and corresponding changing torque) and the torque converter that Honda has not figured out, that shortens the life somehow. Honda doesn't seem to really know why the Gen3 TCs are failing.

Its only been out for one year on the MDX. I haven't heard any issues so far. But again its still new.

Another question, how much difference does the acoustic windshield have on interior noise compared to the EXL?

The touring does feel a bit quieter than the other models, despite its lower profile tires. I don't think the 6 speed has anything to do with it. Pilots have acoustic windshields too and i havent noticed the touring pilot being quieter than other models. in both models there is no hood liner. Not sure there is any correlation.

Raises a couple of questions - can an acoustic windshield be fitted to lesser models. If you acoustic windshield breaks do you have to replace with with the same. Does it cost much more. Do the after market glass companies make acoustic windshields....more than a couple - I shall have to check.

Almost every car in Calgary has a cracked windshield as the roads have stones poured on them for winter traction - unfortunately.

Don't really know. All I can say is that the touring is very quiet. I'm really surprised that CR keeps commenting that the ody has road noise since in my comparison to the sienna the sienna was slightly noisier than our touring. The only noise on the ody is some wind noise at highway speeds if there is a stiff wind blowing from the side, otherwise, its probably the quietest vehicle in the Honda stable. One thing I concur with CR is that though the new van handles very well, when pushed to its limits, its a little sloppier than the old one. I wonder if it has to do with the variable rate shocks (which improve the ride a lot). Variable rate shocks are firm to a point, after that threshold (like a pothole) they actually "soften" to reduce harshness. Thus the Ody handles great on the highway and winding roads but if you attempt to slam it through a tight corner you get more body lean than you would espect.

I test drove both and the Touring was quieter.

You should be able to replace your stock windshield with the Acoustic one when it's due for replacement, and it makes a difference. However, most aftermarket glass is heavier and more crack resistant in my experience, but Honda does not use it for fuel efficiency reasons I am guessing. You may also be able to get aftermarket Acoustic glass, it's pretty mainstream now.

I wonder if the Acoustic windshield resists crackthrough because of it's design, chips should stop halfway through the pane.

Required by law in the US, and I suppose elsewhere.
