Thinking about picking up an '06 with approx. 102,000 miles on it.
Normally I'd be leary of a car with 100,000 miles on it, but being that it only had one owner, has full records, no accidents, and drives/looks like new and is in great shape, I'm interested. It *is* still a Honda product after all, and I've never had a problem with any of the others that I've owned.
Plus, the folks selling it only want 15,998 for it. Which is crazy to me, because right now the nicest/newest car I own is a Honda Fit, which I paid about the same for. Quite an upgrade, eh?
FWIW, I already drove it, and I was surprised at how much I loved it. I expected to be blah'd to death, but it was pretty entertaining all things considered.
What do you guys think? Anything specific to look out for? Any reason I should just stay away? Anyone with an RL with tons of mileage on it?

I have the 2006 Legend but with only about 69,000 miles. No problems to speak of, except for a battery dying without notice 12 months ago.
Oh and about the same time the driver's side rear window stopped working. It was a switch glitch, which a poster on Acurazine showed me how to fix [fiddle with the switches].
The only "issue" from my point of view is I'm a little disappointed in how the interior trim is holding up over the years, nothing major, just a little tatty in detail.
But if you want the whole story on how good a car the RL is go over to the RL forums on Acurazine, they are a mine of information.

THere are 3 things to watch for on a long term RL. Battery dying issue, the master brake cylinder leak and the driveshaft bearing noise. If All of those have been adressed or never happened then it should be fine. Personally I had all 3.

Wasn't the master brake cylinder leak a recalled thing that dealerships would fix for free?
I did read up about the driveshaft bearing noise thing on Acurazine (thanks again for the heads up, sadlerau!) but I have to say it seemed like it was just a noise that never actually affected anything.
I own a 1990 Miata as a weekend car, and after being on the Miata forums which is literally just post after post of doom and gloom and everything you can imagine going wrong all the time, the Acurazine RL forum was refreshing in it's lack of problems. The driveshaft thing seemed to be the only big thing, and again, it never seemed like anyone had any actual problems with the car other than some noise.
I admittedly have some anxiety about even thinking about buying this car because it *is* such a technologically stuffed thing. Like I said, the most complicated and expensive car I've owned to this point is my Fit (LOL) with the Miata and a '98 Accord being my other cars. Generally speaking I do most of the work on my cars, so this would probably be the first that I'd take in for most service.
The "I want the car regardless" part of me just says that it's an Accord V6 with more differentials--something I can handle for the most part--but the logical part of me tells me to hold on until I get more definitive info on long term ownership costs.

I would leave some room in the budget for the upcoming timing belt change at 106k...

The car is very reliable. The driveshaft issue as you pointed out was an annoyance and it cropped up early and it was only some cars. My guess is if after 100K it never happened it never will. The fix however is not cheap, about 2K since you have to replace the whole thing not just the sqeaky bearing. The battery thing is easy and cheap. Make sure the master cylinder thing has been addressed. The price seems high, check the bluebook value and negotiate from there. I traded in my 2006 with 54K miles (for our ody elite) for almost 20K.

Thank you for the replies, gents!
I'm still going to keep it in contention and I'm still going to drive it a second time, but as of now I'm leaning towards a much newer and much lower mileage TL.
Still, it's a temptingly delightful car, and I'm going to keep it on the docket.

I own a 2005 RL and have been quite pleased with the car. Like you mentioned, it is a lot more fun to drive than one would initially imagine.
The battery issue people mention really isn't a biggee in my opinion for they are easy to replace and generally easy to diagnose. The driveshaft issue is one of some minor noise, but certainly won't leave you stranded.
As for maintence, the upcoming timing belt replacement will cost some money. However, all other maintenance is the typical Honda easy stuff. Yes, there are extra differentials; however, their maintenance isn't bad. I've changed the fluids myself and it isn't bad at all.
Regarding the mileage, mine has 36K and showroom new. Some of the other guys with cars 3-4X the mileage have cars that are equally nice. The cars wear surprisingly well.
Due your due diligence. I don't think you can go wrong with an RL.

If it doesn't snow much where you are you'll probably enjoy the TL more. I loved my 2004 but I live in mid WI, SHAWD was a better solution for me.

Yeah, I live in Richmond, VA. We get snow sometimes, but it shuts the city down and my wife and I just stay home.
The TL I'm looking at is sweet-as. I'm pretty pumped either way.
