What I wonder is whether the Insight would have sold better if this new "value model" was introduced in the first place. The main complaint against the Insight was that it was not much cheaper than the Prius (regardless of whether or not the stripper Prius model was actually available on dealer lots), and that even for the price, the interior felt really cheap.
Both of these things are probably improved by now (I would assume that little interior changes, like those damn AC vents wouldn't be mentioned in the press release), but considering how far behind Insight sales are, I don't think it can really recover.

I doubt this model will help now and I doubt it would have helped in the past.
I don't know the exact break down of trim level sales but I would say that of every 20 Insights I see maybe one of them is an LX.
The 2010 LX was stripped down to an almost embarrassing level as it was. I have no idea why Honda thinks that taking out even more content (2 speakers?!, REALLY!?) and cutting the price is going to attract anyone.

2-speakers, no center console/armrest...it reminds me of my '91 Civic DX 3-door! I had to add the digital clock, passenger side (manual) mirror and the center armrest/console on it! It also only had 2-speakers installed by the dealer, so I had to add two more.
BUT it was only about $8k brand new, a blast to drive and had standard wheel covers that didn't look like they came from a thrift store! The wheel covers even had the 'H' logo embossed in the center and everything....
The wheel covers on the Insight "Base" (why not go ahead and call it a DX or VP or BS?) and the LX are beyond hideous. They scream cheap...even the ones one the Civic DX and VP are snazzy in comparison!
The Insight is a DUD...kill it and move on! The CR-Z and Civic Hybrid are far better vehicles.

I guess that's why it outsells both of them by a healthy margin in any of the markets where the three are available...
Oh yeah... I remember :
- If Honda brings a car tailored to US tastes to the US it will be a flop.
- If Honda makes a car tailored to developing nations in Asia (Brio), then they are stupid not to bring it to the US.
- If Honda makes an expensive van (Ody) they are crazy, vans should be cheap.
- If Honda makes a cheap hybrid (Insight 2011) they are stupid, hybrids should be expensive (yet of course Honda should bring the cheaper Fit, which is pretty obvious given the fact that it's the one they are not bringing...)
Oh well ...

Don't start being an asshole and bang on the United States.
The sales speak for themselves, and if Honda doesn't understand the markets they sell in, why don't you place blame on them?

I'll add.
If Honda/Acura doesn't offer manual transmissions combined with a traditional station wagon profile, they are STUPID and don't know what they are doing.

In my opinion the base model will bring more people to the showrooms attracted by the low price. Once there, buyers might be convinced to upgrade. But, those with low budgets craving a hybrid now have a greater chance to get one.
Honda has used this formula here before and has worked.

Plus, they can pull a Toyota or Chevrolet. "offer" the budget or mileage buster version, but never seem to supply any to the dealerships.
Have you ever tried to find a base Prius. I don't think they exist.
