Can someone explain the difference between the Pilot and the Primacy lines of tires and why there are confusingly similar model names (e.g. Pilot MXM4 V rated; Primacy MXM4 H rated)
And such things as is a PS3 newer (and better???) than a PS2 than a Pilot Sport, etc?
Michelin's web site does not exactly clear it up...thanks

I researched this extensively before I bought new tires for my CL-S 6MT last year. The Pilot line is predominately their performance line while the Primacy line is more of a touring tire.
Now, a majority of the Acuras/Hondas have the Pilot HX MXM4 (V-rated) for their sedans. This is actually a grand touring tire despite wearing the Pilot name. More recently, Michelin released the Primacy MXM4 this past July (not to be confused with the Primacy MXV4 -- a replacement for the Energy MXV4 S8). The Primacy MXM4 is set to replace the Pilot HX MXM4 as the standard grand touring tire in the next few years.
The Pilot HX MXM4 has been continually berated on reviews in the major car mags as well as TireRack which is why Michelin is steadily phasing it out. Unfortunately, the new Primacy MXM4 is only available for stock sizes on older Honda/Acura models while the new models continue to be released with the yet-unchanged Pilots.
I replaced these OEM Pilots last fall with the Primacy MXV4 on my CL-S -- not a bad tire, but definitely more of an all-season, comfort-based tread. Of course, this past July they released the Primacy MXM4 in my stock size, so I missed my chance to try these new tires out. The ratings, so far, for the Primacy MXM4 have been excellent for grand touring applications.
Hope that helps...

Thanks very much.
Does the lack of a V rating in the Primacy MXM4 mean that the line will only be H rated, and therefore won't work on the Acura sedans....at least according the owners manual which specifies only V rated tires. I know practically speaking this will never be an issue in the US.

In July, they released a number of V-rated and even W-rated sizes and speed ratings. Check out TireRack's Specs for the Primacy MXM4 and you'll see what's currently available.
In my case, I needed the 215/50R17 93V, a common size for many Acuras/Hondas. I know this was the stock size for the '04-'08 TSX and the upscale Accords (EX, V6 models) from '03-'07, and Type-S models of the CL and TL from '01-'03.

I wish these tires were out when I re-shoed my accord. They are actually priced much better than the old MXM's and have recived rave reviews.
I went with the BS Turanza Serenities and can't stand the tread noise. (note to self, never buy tires with cross cut treads). Also consistently lost about 2mpg vs the OEM tires.

Some of the reviews you really need to scrutinize. I'm certain that many of the reviewers are confusing the Pilot HX MXM4 with the Primacys, so unless they make the distinction in their review, I'd take it with a grain of salt.

At 68k, Primacy MXV4 17's replaced the OEM HX MXM4 17's on my fast/fuel efficient (bias acknowledged) 6M.
No complaints from this sailor (but one observation): the OEM's certainly get a bad wet traction rap from several sources.

Can't identify anything close replacement-wise: (buyer's remorse not welcome here)
.....season's best, ez.....
