Early 2009 Nissan lowered its sales goal for the Z by 1/3. From 30k a year to 10k a year.

" Of the 10,000 370Zs that AN says Nissan now hopes to sell in 2009, 7,000 would be destined for the United States and the remaining 3,000 units would be sold in Europe. The industry publication did not publish Japanese domestic market (JDM) sales predictions for the car (known locally as the Fairlady Z)."

So they are slightly slower at about 8k a year in USA.

I agree the Z is a stellar car. Probably one of the most appealing in the category, and I would have a hard time between it and the Mustang GT if I were shopping in the segment.

It bodes poorly for enthusiasts because the Genesis is another example of a poorly moving car.

I know the CR-Z is still new, but with all the bitching, you would have expected the 370Z to move at least twice as many cars, and yet it is down almost 30%. Unfortunately, while the "enthusiasts" talk about sports car, they apparently aren't buying them unless it is a 'Stang or Camaro. Unfortunate but true.

All I know is I would hate to be tracking the auto industry right now. The numbers have been all over the place the last few months.
As much as I like the CR-Z (which you all know), I don't think it's fair to compare sales of both to reach such comclusions, because the 370Z is way more expensive, and it's therefore only natural that it sells less.

I don't find any car that could actually compare straight with the CR-Z, but I'd feel more comfortable if someone compared it to Si coupe sales for example. In Europe and Japan it's obvious that the CR-Z outsells K20 powered hot Civics (Euro and JDM R's), but I'm not so sure in the US (don't bring the US sedan here though)

I haven't drawn any conclusions other than the FACT that the CR-Z outsold the 370Z, which according to the "enthusiasts" on here, A) would never happen, and B) fairly clearly shows that the market for sports cars sucks right now.

Compared to previous sales, the Z is absolutely in the tank. Yes, the CR-Z is cheaper, but truth be told, the difference between a fully loaded CR-Z and the base model Z is only about $5k. That isn't far to stretch considering the performance difference, so clearly if performance were the only consideration, then the Z would be doing better.

If I had 35K to spend on a new car, I would take a sport package manual 370Z hands down. Nothing else is really in the same realm for the money.

Having said that, it is a bit sad the sales are not better but don't forget they are still triple what ZDX sales are :)

A CRZ starts at $19K, EX Nav auto is $24K. A EX is $22K.

The base 370Z is $31K... but good luck finding one of those.
sport $34K
touring $36K
Touring + Sport $39K
40th anniversary $39.5K
NISMO $40.5K

So the most common CR-Z is ~$22K.
The most common 370Z is ~$34-36K.

This is a huge difference, and completely different buyers.

I still think Honda would be fine selling something a good step above the Civic Si, and a step below the 370Z for Civic Si +$5K or ~$28K... that isn't a Accord.

Fleets are Fueling the Sales Rise
September delivered the best U.S. monthly sales rate in 13 months. But the industry isn't doing it with retail sales.

Fleet sales are the growth engine of the U.S. auto market, according to automakers' internal documents obtained by Automotive News.

Dang, I remember reading months ago, Mark Fields said Ford was going to increase their fleet sales reversing the previous push to reduce fleet.

Ford 46% increase! Now selling more fleet than anyone.

As usual, Honda isn't a player. Funny how forum member FAL claimed yesterday that Honda is going to be relying on fleet sales even more!
