After going to various Acura dealers for oil changes (and not liking the experience), I've now started trying local garages.
The latest place put non-synthetic. The guy swore that the synthetic is unnecessary and that non synthetic oil rated for turbo engines was fine. "we get RDX's all the time" was his words.
really?
at the time I thought "$70 savings!" but now I'm rethinking this might have been a really bad idea.
anyone with any insight?

Are you afraid or unwilling to change the oil yourself? I don't know the capacity of the RDX but you should be able to get the synthetic oil for under $30 and a filter and drain plug washer for about $6-7 if ordered online. I haven't changed the oil in an RDX but I can do the job in under 30 minutes in any of my 3 hondas.
You're probably okay with regular oil if you change it out much sooner than the synthetic. I don't know if it would really help but if it were me I'd probably monitor the oil color and condition weekly just to be safe.

I believe the guy at the garage just wanted your buisness. You never want to put non synthetic oil in turbo engines. Old turbo engines were un-reliable because turbo engines run at slightly higher temps than normal engines, especialy in the turbo, and regular oil would break down faster leaving deposits in the turbos.
With synthetic oil it is able to withstand the higher temp stresses of a turbo engine, that's why Honda was so anal about using mobil one synthetic, and NOT regular oil. Don't wait until your maintainence minded system tells you to change the oil, change it ASAP. But don't get scared that your engine will blow, just don't do it again.
I owned a 07 RDX before I traded it in for my 09 TSX and the oil change was just as easy as any K series engine. Hope this helped.

I've been too lazy to change my own oil, I guess I really should.
thanks to the both of you, its the whole HTO-06 thing that has me really worried. I'll monitor and change it out if I think anything is wrong, but for now I guess I'm ok and relatively safe.

No, you are not OK. Get it flushed out and changed yesterday. They don't put all that info on the oil cap and in the manual just for the hell of it.

You would probably void the warranty if you leave that oil in there. The manual specifically calls for synthetic oil.

Been changing the oil on my 07 rdx since day one. So simple that the longest part of the whole process is waiting for the oil to drain from the pan. I think 15 minutes tops??? The fliter is on the bottom side of the motor and drain plug is right next to it. Cann't get any simpler than that....
