Honda Riding Mower?    (Score: 1, Normal) 05-14-2010 17:34

I've been slowly converting my stock of lawn equipment to Honda engined versions and am wondering when, or if, Honda is ever going to produce a residential or commercial riding mower.

My John Deere has been great so far but the Honda engines in my lawn vacuum and power washer have really impressed me with their ease of use and power. So logically, I questioned where's Honda's riding mower line and where I could buy one.

So c'mon Honda, make a riding mower! Or I'll be forced to swap a K in my John Deere. ;)

Honda made state of the art riding mowers for years, however I don't think people cared too much or if it was poor marketing. They used to make residential and commercial, however today I think they only sell walk behinds in USA due to the low cost of "Heinz 57" mowers. Last year I bought a 20 years old trade in Honda 3011 riding mover from a dealership. Works great, even "brush-hogging" fence line at the farm. Last week I helped the neighbor with his 1992 MTD riding mower. On the steering wheel it says "60 years of excellence 1932-1992". My Honda is a little older, however compared to the MTD the Honda is like comparing NSX to Model T Ford. Maybe MTD meant to say they made the mower unchanged from 1932 to 1992? Belt change on the Honda is a few minutes task, but a lengthy ordeal on the MTD. While the Honda is about low center of gravity, the MTD is like using stilts. Engineering is night and day, MTD uses 2 belts and pulleys to regulate speed and forward/ reverse while the Honda has an over-sized highly reliable hydrostatic drive. The Honda uses OHV engine and the MTD a flat head Briggs. A dealer told me they never had any problem with the hydrostatic drive. I've also heard that AHM in an effort to lower the price on the mowers imported either some mowers or the hydrostatic drive from Italy and experienced why Fiat never made it in USA. Problems aplenty.

All over Europe they still sell Honda riding mowers. You might be able to pick up some nice used ones in USA on e-bay or otherwise.

For most people zero-turn is the best solution. They allow most lawns tobe mowed in much less time. Several maklers of such mowers use both Honda and Kawasaki engines. Usually they are offered as an upgrade to a Briggs model.

As just an idea for this coming winter project, I'd thought I'd check in and see what the pricing and availability of a Honda engine swap into my JD L125.

Turns out the GXV690 would fit well but my heart sank when the price was relayed: $1500. As a comparision, I didn't pay $1500 for the whole tractor new. :(

Still interested but it doesn't sound promising.

I used to race Honda Mowers at the Employee Picnic in Torrance.

There was this snot nosed pre teenage boy that tried to pass me on the inside... Well, I got him well, closed his line and sped off. ;-)

Maybe the managers saw the maniac at the wheel (the boy) and figured that us Americans can not be trusted with such a thing.

I would take the one with the guy that had the stroke and his dad bought it new in 1987...........There are a few NEW ones or NEWER, but nothing like the older ones.
