I was offered pics of this exact same car in a different setting. They were great pics (in dry conditions with great lighting/exposure/resolution) but they show basically nothing new at all, so I passed on them.

What an ugly piece of cr*p!!!. I see Honda's design team is still unable to design a visually unoffensive design. This car looks like it was hit in the rear by a semi. That short rear overhang is disgusting, even for a hatchback. If that is an indication of what our Civic will be, goodbye Honda.

The basic profile of the 'mule' is same as current Euro Civic on sale since 2006. Obviously not for the 'taste' of some on this side of the pond.

BTW, when is the last time that a member of TOV 'want' more overhang from Honda?

It never ceases to amaze me with the speed the criticism starts !! Its sooooo obviously the current euro civic and a mule of one at that, that it is hysterically funny to hear someone having a blast at its design.
Interestingly the observation that it has a wider rear track may hopefully point to an abandonment of the awful torsion beam............or am I hoping too much

wow i'll rather say nothing about steve otherwise i'll get banned. clearly not from a country where hatchbacks are popular, but hatchback design 101.. short overhangs are good! and it s not actually that short its just curves quite a lot. but i do see a wider rear track and lengthened and higher front due probably to improved crash structure and better pedestrian safety for the next model. AKA they are taking the bits that looked really nice and f'n it up. hopefully they can make it work though. i really hope they do something about the rear door opening because u always hit your head when u get in the back. the interior 2! worse quality than the sedan. someone needs to kick the brits up the chuff for that.

Didn't they announce that there will be a sub-TSX Acura here? Could the next Euro Civic be it? We get the Euro Accord as the TSX so I could see it.

Is it true that the Euro Civic is based on the Fit platform?

I always thought that the Euro Civic design would make for a perfect Civic Hybrid. Honda now hints the next HCH will have distinctly styling, so who knows.

No, the Euro and World Civic share platforms. The Euro does use a similar beam rear axle as the Fit, but still not shared.

The Civic in Japan is the Acura CSX..which are still pretty much identical.

No, as with any car built on the same "platform" (plank or whatever you wanna call it) every adaptation has its own specific stuff, but:
- Euro Civic is built on the Global Small Platform, with which it shares all the basic features (McPerson front - torsion beam rear, short wheelbase, gas-tank under the front seats, magic seats, etc.).
- Civic sedan/coupe are built on the Global Mid Platform.

Regardless of that, the Euro Civic is by far the most expensive Civic in the World, although most Americans that tend to value cars by size and power wouldn't understand it.

Hello,
months ago I drove the insight and didn´t like it.
As I was told to many people complained (steering & noise vs. ride - I live in Germany) - but love the hybrid thing.
On the other side the euro civic has a great image, but sales aren´t so good anymore.
So I tought maybe this is not a mule for the 9th generation, but a HCH 8th generation.

Mules always look strange and ruff, or? They never look exactly like an "old" model.

Also the car has a Sticker "Brake tests" on front and rear from ATE, a conti brand. Why do testing on a cars brakes which has been produced since years?
Except maybe wenn testing a new recuperation system?

If the 8th gen would keep on till 2012, then a HCH would help.
Well, I would buy it.
A I understood the plattform is the same, so could it be reasonable?

I really don’t get what Honda is doing. They have fallen behind in drive train technology, hybrid technology, interior gadgetry, and where the heck is the Hot Hatch for the USA? VW can’t get enough GTI over here, but Honda is absent in an area where they built their name?

I owned an Integra and LOVED having a vehicle that drove like a sporty car with the utility of an SUV. IMO the RSX died because no money was put into keeping the interior up to date (the same goes with the S2000). That should still be the sub-TSX model. By putting 2 and 2 together it seems the sub-TSX is the CSX sedan from Canada. Another sedan for Acura.

I am a guy that likes sporty small cars. I like to zip around traffic, shift a lot, and I really enjoy driving. It is a pleasure for me to drive. What does Honda offer me now?

If VW GTI is found to be reliable after this year, maybe a 2011 will be in my future. I am surprised. Because my Honda have just been absolutely bullet proof (Prelude, Integra, Accord), but what is available leaves me cold.

Give me Euro Civic and I would stay in the Honda family, but the US Civic is a sedan and I don’t want another sedan and the Insight/CR-Z/Fit are snails.

It's quite possible the Civic hatchback could gain a hybrid version. It uses a platform based on the Fit/Jazz, which itself is getting a hybrid version, so that helps.

You are right to point out the brake-testing, wheels, and weight load of this vehicle to be suspect. I would also point to the aero-smooth front upper grille and lack of noticeable tailpipe, like Honda's other hybrids.

I've heard rumors that the next Civic Hybrid in the States will be unique somehow. It would be incredibly interesting if the Civic Hybrid came in hatchback-only form. That would differentiate it from the regular non-hybrid Civics, and it would offer a hatchback again (and force those who want a hatchback to buy a hybrid, haha). Could take care of the issue of the batteries taking up too much space for a sedan and not allowing folding seatbacks.

Perhaps the Civic hatch can return to the Japanese market as well (other than the limited FN2-R), marking a return to a world Civic hatch. If production would take place in Japan, they would be cheaper to bring to the U.S. than from the U.K. And if the hybrid is hatch-only all over, the sedan would no longer need to be shipped to UK solely for the IMA drivetrain.

So then Honda could really sprint and make the current Euro Civic a hybrid prior to the next generation civic.
Good ;-)

Then it could be sold in Japan, NA and ... as a more sporty and luxurious hatchback upper of the insight and upper the prius. Maybe not even named civic hybrid so it wouldn't interfere in sales of the current or next generation civic. Call it CR-E.

In europe, UK, Australia and... the euro civic hatchback is known so it could be sold as the new civic hybrid, boosting sales again.
Also offering something against the new toyota corolla/auris hybrid. Also Honda has more time to development / introduce the next gen Civic on these markets.

Because of the plattform the hybrid development costs are "low", also the Euro Civic production is already up and running, so Honda only has marginal costs there.
Honda could produce the CR-E in Japan or ... and prepare the UK & ?? sites for the next gen civic.

I think it would sell in Europe, being "more car" than a insight and more practical than the CR-Z.
Maybe in NA the insight is opening demand for better hatchbacks?
