On April 15th, we learned that the production of the Civic Type R, the sports version of the Honda Civic 4 door sedan, will come to an end. This is due to poor sales due to poor gas mileage and in addition to the difficulty of controlling emissions. This will also be officially announced on the 19th. The "Type R" brand has been the symbol of Honda's sports car image, and
has had a solid following by its fans. Models such the Integra and NSX have been configured to be "Type Rs", however the Civic Type R is only model currently available on the domestic market that retains the Type R brand.
There were plans to import the Civic Type R Euro, which is the 3 door hatch back version produced in the U.K., however if the plans fall through, this could mean the end of the existence of Type R brand within the Japanese Domestic Market.
The Civic Type R was originally produced in 1997, for sports minded fans who can appreciate a high performance sports car.

They say production will come to an end this summer, but they say nothing about "what's next"?
Btw, as far as I know Honda imported a few Euro CivicTypeRs a few months ago, but that's over now. I wonder if they are talking about "the next generation".
That said, the previous generation Civic TypeR was imported from Europe also, and there was not even a Japanese Civic TypeR as such, so it wouldn't be so surprising, specially if Japanese aren't buying those cars anymore.
Also, the Civic should have seen its FMC this fall on typical Honda fashion (although it seems some redesign pushed it to next year), so I'm not that surprised they decided to stop production of the R on time (which didn't start with the 8th-gen Civic either), specially if nobody is buying them. I honestly don't think this is an indication of "the end of TypeRs" though, and even less extrapolable to "the end of the Civic Si". As long as US people buy those Si's, I don't think they are going anywhere.
You can always whine though.

Do they even run the engines high enough that they hit the second cams for emission tests?

They really stopped selling the Euro Civic R in Japan? Hard to believe they would go to that much effort for just a few months.
Looking at the JDM Honda site, it appears they have the Civic Type R listed under the "SUV" banner. That probably doesn't help sales...

I Think it reads Sports/SUV, but I get your point.
You don't expect to find the NSX lumped in with gennies & water pumps...

I think they simply made a batch of them, and got it up there until they sold those. It was a "limited edition".
| November 5, 2009 - Honda Motor co., Ltd. today announced that it will begin sales of a limited number of the Civic Type R Euro, a premium sports model with a distinctive, stylish form and performance that was forged on European roads. Only 2,010 units will be available for sale in Japan. |

These 2 announcements by Honda Japan kinda sums it all:

Press release from Honda Malaysia, the only country outside of Japan that sells the FD2R
Honda to End Production of 4-Door Civic Type R
Honda Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. (Honda Malaysia or the Company) today announced that the Company will end sales of the popular 4-Door Civic Type R following the announcement from Honda Motor Co., Ltd, Japan.
Honda Motor Co., Ltd. will discontinue production of the 4-door Civic Type R at the end of August, 2010. Malaysia is the only country outside of Japan to make available the 4-Door Civic Type R.
Mr. Toru Takahashi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Honda Malaysia said, “We are proud that the Civic Type R has fulfilled its mission of providing the joy of driving and joy of ownership to its many customers in Malaysia. However, having evaluated the model based on environmental performance, which is the new method of calculating emissions in JC08 mode, as well as current market demands, we believe that the time has come for us to discontinue production of the 4-Door Civic Type R.”
The 4-Door Civic Type R was introduced to the Malaysian market in August 2007 to fulfill the demands of the market. The Type R is in a class of its own, having achieved cult status with a huge following in Malaysia, whether directly or indirectly.
Since its introduction, close to 12,000 units have been sold in both Japan and Malaysia. To date, Honda Malaysia have sold 234 units of the 4-Door Civic Type R (August 2007 – March 2010).
At this moment, customers in Malaysia can still place orders for the Civic Type R at any authorized Honda dealer. The 4-Door Civic Type R is priced at RM199,800.
Going forward, Honda remains committed to performance cars which provide the joy of driving to its customers. The benchmark has been brought a notch higher now as Honda seeks to produce cars that not only meet the demand for performance, but also environmental responsibility.
Looks like the Swindon's R is the way to go.

It is useful to bear in mind that the current generation Civic was launched in Japan at the end of 2005. On a 5 years model life cycle, this means the logical end of life and FMC for the Civic is end of this year. There have been talks that the Civic has been extended to a 6 years life-cycle, like the Fit/Jazz but Honda has never confirmed or denied that. The typical date for launch of new model is actually September-October so if the 5 years cycle holds, then September this year will be the launch of the 9th Generation Civic. Which makes the announced end of life in August for the FD2R kind of an interesting coincidence......
At this moment in time, there is no news of what the next Civic holds for us. Back in 2005, I had some serious supporters in Honda Malaysia, one of whom even told me specifications of the R18A (which I relayed to Jeff) months before the 8G Civic was launched (I was at that time, wondering how on earth Honda could make VTC work with an SOHC configuration as I was told it would be a 1.8l SOHC i-VTEC engine tuned for economy). Sadly, they have all left Honda Malaysia not long after that. They never had a chance to elevate TOVA to the level within Honda Malaysia that they had hoped to, due to numerous detrimental factors that came into play at the time.
It would be interesting to pay extra attention to the numerous JDM car-scoop magazines from today onwards. Or to visit the more reliable japanese websites more often, to get scoop info of the new Civic the moment it comes on. Mag-X have always been one magazine my Honda friends told me provides uncannily accurate estimates of yet to be launched Honda models.
