I am the proud owner 2000 Accord V6 coupe with manual transmission. My Accord had been sitting in the driveway for the last two weeks without use. This morning I decided to turn it on. The car fired up as usual, however, when I attempted to give it some gas while in park I noticed that my accelerator was quite stiff. When I put a little pressure on it, the accelerator locked up at full throttle. Seeing that it was locked up a revving extremely high I panicked and promptly turned off the vehicle. I took a closer look at the accelerator and finally got it unstuck. When I attempted to fire up the engine the next time around, the car fired up at full throttle. I’m talking crazy acceleration. I thought I was going to blow the engine. My first thought was that the linkage between the accelerator and throttle on the engine was broken or stuck. After taking a closer look, it’s not. With the car off I can see the accelerator pull on the throttle. I also made sure that the throttle was in the resting position with the accelerator disengaged. It was, however, whenever I try to fire up the engine – bam – extremely high idle. I’m afraid of turning this thing on now for fear of damaging the engine.

Does anyone have any clue what is going on? What accelerates my car while in idle with the accelerator disengaged? Is it the computer or is there a separate throttle for idle acceleration? I’m not sure how this happened. This started with a stuck accelerator and now my car is possessed. Someone, anyone please help me shed some light on what is going on here.

Thank you.

I think the idle air control valve (IACV) may be stuck open. Remove it and clean it and see if it solve the problem. The IACV control engine idle. Do not adjust the idle speed screw.
