I have a 1999 Honda Civic EX with 113,000 miles. It has always had regular maintenance performed timely. In April 07 it died while driving down the road. I needed a new distributor. (I've used the same mechanic for years for several different vehicles.) The very next day the engine light came on. I needed a new catalytic converter and O2 sensor. 2 weeks ago the car broke down again. The distributor had to be replaced again. This was attributed to a bad after market part. I spoke to another foreign car specialist to make sure it was not my mechanic screwing with me (which I had doubted). He installed a different (manufactured) and more expensive distributor. The very next day the check engine light came on again and I am now having to replace the converter AGAIN. There has to be a connection between these two parts. Has anyone ever experienced this or have any information for me?? Do I just have a lemon? The timing belt was changed at 100k.

I would recommend taking it to a Honda dealer. A foreign specialist is not the same as a place that is trained to specifically work on your car. Especially with diagnostics. If you dont know of a dependable dealership service department, ours is very good with over 100 combined years of experience and very reasonably priced.

I know this is an old post but I just stubbled upon it. I have a 97 civic with about 1400,000 on it. When my engine light came on I took it to the dealership and they told me the computer was reporting false negatives. Which means the computer went bad. Luckily, not to my knowing, honda extended the warranty on all cars like this to 150,000 miles. So honda replaced it for free!! Sounds like the computer could be screwy in your car too. If you are still around what did you do to fix it.

That extended warranty is only on 96 and 97 models, I'm pretty sure. I think it's 14 years/150k miles on virtually any component that will trigger the MIL (or "check engine" light). I'm sure others here on TOV know the details better . . .
