IMHO, three things need to be addressed if HAM were to start building Fits in the near future:
(1) Is there a production line available? Yes, if the lines can be build both large and small Hondas. It used to be that the floorplan pick up points used to define what "type" of car a line could build, and Accord types and Civic Types could not be mixed. But according to this thread this is no longer the case.
(2) Is there line capacity? Yes, if the MDX, Pilot, Ridgeline are slow sellers then they can throttle production and start building Fits.
(3) Can the suppliers ramp up? Yes up to a point. We are not talking about NEW parts, but about increasing production of existing parts. This may be achieved by running a second or third shift to existing plants.
So, yes, I think HAM could build Fits with some ease... yes, of course there will be time limits for suppliers and plants to build up. But insofar as AHM doesn't attempt to build 100K Fits off the bat, but perhaps just 25K more, I don't see why subassemblies and parts could not initially be shipped from Japan while in a year or so some production of parts could be brought into NA.

I know the process "Lean Manufacturing" as you call it, but the way YOU made it sound is that Honda could just start building Fits over night. I just simply gave the readers a little "Insight" on what it takes to build a car. It's a network of suppliers and you have to produce.
Maybe "nightmare" was the wrong choice of wordage. I have a customer who supplies Ody, Pilot and Rglin something or other (for protection I won't say what they supply to Honda) but Honda wanted it thinner, lighter and stronger for less cost then they originally agreed and wanted it in a very short time.
They are very demanding and that is good and why they are the best. Union shops couldn't live under those conditions. As a supplier CarPhreakD, I'm sure you know the room for era is .00000000000001% and the ability to produce, the guarantee to produce is 120%. Correct me if I'm wrong tho you have a solid production # before you start supplying parts for the year?? I know with GM if they order 500k Dana rear ends for Silverado's and only build 300k, GM has 200k sitting in a warehouse and if they need 150k more they have to negotiate a new contract.
It's my understanding with Honda the way it was explained with me they order say 300k windshields for production and 10k for parts. The suppliers build 90% of that number and if the other 10% is needed it's called for in ample time and the supplier can guarantee a 10% above the 300k number if needed. Is that how Honda works??

It's good to read the comments from the people in the business.
I heard that in terms of flexible manufacturing, BMW tops all with the ability to customize the production vehicles. The customers are rewarded with more unique vehicles.
Regarding the current economy, contraction is expected. Things have been running on excess for too long. An economy too dependent on consumer spending is not good. Hopefully my cars will continue to run well.
