I'm looking to buy snows mounted on steel rims for my 08 CSX.

Is it possible to go to 15" rims and if so what would the tire size be?

Also, in addition to lower cost, what are the advantages/disadvantages of opting for 15" rims instead of 16"?

Your car is very much like the Civic so a 195/65 x 15" snow tire would be similar diameter to your existing tires. This size is very popular so they will be cheaper than going with a 16" low profile tire.

You will notice some reduction in steering response with the higher profile tire. However, a slightly narrower tire is usually better in the snow and slush. I would look for tires with an ice traction tread design versus the heavy snow cleat types. Front wheel drive already gives you an advantage to begin with. Also, be sure to mount them on all 4 wheels.

The two brands I would look at are Michelin and Nokian but there are several other good tires on the market. As a matter of fact, I'm in the market to get a set for my Civic Hybrid at the moment, so I have been checking them out too.

Not that it's that big of a difference, 16 or 15, but the 15's would be better. The higher aspect ratio allows the tire to better conform to imperfect road conditions, especially in cold temperatures. Normally this is only a big deal on really low aspect ratio combinations, and I doubt it will be a big deal on 60's or 55's that you have now in summer tires, but you're headed in the right direction, anyway.

More importanly, probably, is that the 15's will be cheaper for the wheels and tires when purchasing new, and probably easier to find. Plus, as an overgeneralization, higher aspect ratio tires last longer, and they'll probably deal with the potholes that come with winter weather (at least around here).

A narrower tire is better, but I wouldn't spend any time trying to find the narrowest tire you can, maybe go 10 or 20mm narrower (first number in tire size) if you can keep the exterior diameter close at the most.

You can absolutely use 15" steel wheels on your CSX. My parents have 15" steel wheels from a 2006+ Civic DX mounted on P195-65R15 Goodyear UltraGrip Winter tires. The other posters are correct in saying that a narrower tire is better for traction in the snow and slush, since it reduces the amount of work that the tire has to do, and that it doesn't have to "plow" through the snow like a wider tire would.

In addition to my previous post, it's important to note that 15" steel wheels will not clear the front brakes on the CSX Type S. The Type S has larger brakes than the base CSX does. 15" steel wheels will only fit on the base CSX. For the CSX Type S, you will have to use 16" steel wheels.

Thanks for the input.

I was going to get aftermarket rims but the CSX has a monitoring system for tire pressure and I want to maintain that so I'm getting my tires from elsewhere but having my Acura dealer mount the tires, provide the rims and the necessary sensors.
