It saves some much space.

I'm sure it saves Honda money. It is a shame that such an expensive car does not have it!
I would also like to see front & rear obstacle detection sensors for Honda/Acura vehicles longer than 190inches.

Probably because they fail? My co-worker's VW has them, and I guess the rain leaked in and they rusted and every time she has to close the trunk lid, it's a chore.
And Honda has had them in the past, I believe the Accords had them. They probably had the same problems, so that's why they've stopped using them.

True, they do fail and they reduce the opening size of the trunk because of how they have to be attached. The current design alows a much larger trunk entrey along with springs that never fail.
The Accords you're talking about with "trunk struts" were 94 and 95 and they had so many problems with those trunks in 96 "Mid Model Year Change" they went back to the tried and true way that you see today. Stick with what works. The Germans are not always right.

Looks like they're learning. Those of you who think gooseneck trunklid hinges are too vulgar for Tier 1, pop open the trunk of a current 5-Series or E-Class. You might be surprised.

You got that right dampflok! "GOOSENECK"! Nicely finished I might add, just like the new TL is. Why does everyone have to nit pick???
Nothing is perfict, but the new TL is a very impressive hunk of leather and metal to look at, I imagin it will be even more impressive to throw around the pavement.

Besides, TL's hinge isn't exactly a run of the mill type. It does not press against the stuff in the luggage compartment.
I think many simply assume "struts - better", "gooseneck - bad/cost cutting". They need to see that while base 3-series uses struts, 7-series uses gooseneck hinges similar to TL.

Hey, what do you know, I checked online, and the current S-Class and Lexus LS also use the enclosed goosenecks. But what if just as other Tier 1 contenders and pretenders are zigging toward goosenecks, Acura decides it needs to zag toward struts? :-)

My 1995 Honda Civic EX sedan has the strut type hinges and to this day they work like new.

Maybe it works in certain applications. I'm not sure on the new Accord, but on the last gen Accord (at least on the EX), the hood had struts. So Honda isn't exactly opposed to using them.

The BMW 760Li has the same type of hinges the TL has. It also doesn't have struts.

I attached a pic of the 7-series for you and i wonder why? It is kind of nifty how the 760Li has a little compartment where the hinges are.

my Civic 1993 LX had them too and I hated them each time I used the trunk. I had to use both hands and force the trunk to close it.

My '94 Accord got those hinges(strut) too, and I'm too familiar with the 'force' you talk about! My previous car('91 Accord) had the goose-necks, and when it's opened, all I did was push down on the lid with one finger; it would just fall smoothly, and, voila!

our 03' E500 has hinges similar to the Tl's. The struts i worry about are the ones on the lift gate of my odyssey...the struts on my town & country which i traded in for the ody has failed before and that lift gate is bloody heavy..
