I've been beating the combined EPA (revised 2008) estimate by 43.5% through hypermiling! You can click on "View Fuel Log" for specific data on fill-ups.

I'm thrilled. Using the pulse/glide technique, as well as DWB (driving w/o brakes), I've managed to pull so much more mileage from my daily routine. I spend much more time in neutral now, which makes me realize how wasteful I was being in the past.

It's gotten to the point where I limit how many times a week I reach redline for fear of dropping below 30mpg. A year ago, I never thought I would feel that way.

Everyone... EVERYONE... should read 105 Hypermiling Tips and Beating the EPA.

I haven't gotten thru to the end of the list, but #48 struck me. "Braking Hard" is something I would call... brake early and gradually instead of scrubbing off much of the speed right away. Not only is it safer with traffic around, chances increase that some momentum may still be around if the light does turn green. This is akin to DWB except that some braking is implied.

The entire idea is summarized is avoiding complete stops when possible. I also use it by coasting to a right (or left) turn and slowing down just enough to complete a safe turn.

I especially like one of the first points... drive less! I drive often on two routes between same origination and destination points, one is 13 miles and the other is 14.5 miles. Under similar traffic conditions but since the longer route has fewer lights/higher speed, the trip computer can indicate 29-30 mpg in my TL (only 1.5 miles is on freeway which happens to be part of common stretch on both routes). The shorter route will often indicate 26-27 mpg.

So, a round trip will result in burning one gallon of fuel even though the longer route allowed for 10-15% better fuel economy. That is why in an effort towards hypermiling, it isn't always the best idea to just improve gas mileage, but reduce fuel consumption and my observation/example proves that.

All the points you have made, they do discuss and recommend them as well. Tip #48 is only for those specific instances where you don't see a red traffic light until the last second (out of view, sudden change, etc.). You brake hard to scrub speed if there is no one behind you, so that you never have to come to a complete stop. It takes more energy to move your car from a standstill than at a 5mph roll.

My biggest hurdle is that I need to DRIVE LESS. All these tips are negligible when compared to NOT DRIVING. I'm currently putting 25k/year on the odometer so I'm desperately trying to consolidate my trips and make my friends drive more often.

Even though the sheer enjoyment of driving the Si is almost worth the gas...

I'm on 6h4 same boat as you are.

This year, so far, I have 13000 miles, so it looks like i'll be looking at 30000 miles for my third consecutive year in the Si. and the 5th consecutive year since the 1997 civic HX, and my 6th consecutive year since the 2001 honda odyssey.

I though by using smaller cars it'll get better for my gas, and i'd probably end up driving less as life style changes, but no. Its all the same. I used to fill up the odyssey back in the days with about 35 dollars. Today I fill up my Si with $50. Ridiculous.

The hx would get filled up with 20, that was sweet. and it would take me 400 miles per tank.

were the si and odyssey would both do around 300 miles per tank.

a little over 10 years ago I would drive my GS-R like a bat out of hell for some 250-300 miles and fill the tank for $7-8 per week. My commute is very short these days (our office is less than 1.5 miles from my house, and I work from home quite a bit too) so I fill up my Si once a month. Of course, every month the cost of that lone fill-up has steadily increased since I purchased my car.

I encounter one such light everyday. However, I won't recommend hard braking there. My approach is to let the car roll (generally slow down) until I can see the signal instead of waiting till the last moment. This allows the vehicle following me to be better prepared, and it also allows me to ensure there isn't a vehicle or two already stopped at a red light as I go around the curve.

Regardless of the situation, my approach is all about timing the lights, avoiding the need to stop completely while being a defensive driver (not just by myself looking for the lights but also anyone who might be stopped or is following me).

Unsafe driving is not worth 0.05 gallons of fuel saved. Folks at hypermiling forums don't like anybody pointing that out though.

BTW, I got 28.8 mpg on my 1998 Accord/4AT on the last tank with 85% city driving! That would be 32% improvement over the new EPA rating (assuming 85% city/15% hwy split).
And this is using...
- DWB
- Cruise Control (whenever possible)
- Pulse & Glide
- Tires inflated at 35 psi (3 psi above recommended)
- Scheduling my trips around light to moderate traffic (largely to avoid getting stuck behind slower folks)

Thats pretty good for a car with over 190K miles also due for wheel alignment and new air filter. This was following a 28.1 mpg tank in my 06 TL/5AT but the Acura saw quite a bit more hwy (about 70%).

Great topic. I've been DWB'ing as much as possible. Haven't had a road trip to test pulse/glide. I hope I get your great mileage with my 09 SI Sedan.
