Ok, i know this is everywhere but my problem is my vtec won't work. The solenoid is fine because we tested the thing and it makes sound. It's not the ECU because mine is chipped and vtec kicks in fine when we tried it in my cousin's car. My car is a 93 civic dx with a 99-00 USDM B16A2 in it. Lastly I read somewhere about it possibly being the oil pressure but how would I go on checking that?

Are you able to read any check engine codes from your ECU? There are a few reasons for VTEC not working. Reading the codes would give us a good start to diagnosing the problem. It could be oil pressure but if your VTEC system has a VTEC pressure switch, you would normally get a code 22 for that problem. I don't know the B16s well enough to know. It may not have the switch. One way to test it mechanically is to hook up an oil pressure gauge to the head, disconnect the solenoid connector and apply battery voltage to the solenoid while revving the engine to about 5000 RPM. You should see at least 50 psi on the oil pressure gauge. You cannot do this test by just revving the engine because the ECU will engage VTEC unless the vehicle speed is at a certain level. So you have to manually activate the solenoid. If your car has an oil pressure gauge in it (its a good thing to have if you don't) then you will know if the engine is producing enough oil pressure. The test I described above just determines if that oil pressure is reaching the VTEC mechanism. I forgot to mention that you connect the oil pressure gauge by removing a sealing bolt on the front, top left corner of the head.

Hey thanks a lot I didn't know you could check the ECU code like that. Anyway it turned out that it was the solenoid, which is weird because my cousin and I did the test thing where you jump the solenoid and the solenoid was clicking. I read somewhere where some guy was having the same problem and someone else posted that he should see if cleaning the solenoid would help, do you know anything about that? BTW, I'm going to take your advice and purchase an oil pressure gauge. Thanks!

Yes cleaning out the little screens in the valve may solve the problem. Its worth a try, especially if the solenoid itself is working which it seems to be judging by the clicking. Its not difficult to take it off and clean it. Be advised though that you may have to replace the little screen in there. Its not expensive. If the car has been sitting to allow the oil to drain out of the head, there will be very little if any oil run out when you loosen the bolts. Just tuck a rag in under the valve to catch any drips.
