I have an '04 RSX with the basic audio setup (no Bose components). The service guy (dealership parts) tells me that the head unit is a Clarion (30W x 4). However, he doesn't have the specs on the speakers. For such a sporty little ride, the sound system gets beat-up by road noise and wind rushing through the windows. I want to upgrade the sound quality a bit. Nothing drastic. I don't want subs in my trunk. I rode in a co-worker's car with that stuff, and I couldn't take it!! The service guy suggested adding sound-proofing material to the car. I went to Crutchfield, and one of their guys suggested replacing the factory speakers with some Boston Acoustics S65RC (front and rear). Before I replace any components, I need to be sure that the replacement parts are of a higher specification. HERE'S THE QUESTION: Can anyone tell me what the specs are for the stock speakers on this car?

If you know how to take a door panel off it should be pretty easy to find the model of the speaker. To get the door panel off, remove and screws on the panel, usual on the handle and maybe in a coin holder? pull the panel up and to the left, should come right off.

Regardless of the specs on the factory speakers you can almost be 100% sure that aftermarket replacements will be better.

Let me throw in my own recommendation.
I was going to recommend Alpines, as I had a good experience with them in my Accord, but they won't fit your car. Those Polk speakers have tons of reviews with a 5 star average. The Boston Acoustics are more expensive and only have a few reviews with only a 3.5 star average, with lots of complaints about lack of bass. I know you don't want a sub, and believe me, I didn't want to deal with that either. If you're not getting a sub, though, you need to make sure your internal speakers have some bass to them. It doesn't need to be car shaking, but good bass gives music warmth and depth. Without it, everything will sound harsh and tinny. Don't even worry about specs, those Polks will fit according to Crutchfield, and I guarantee they'll be leagues better than whatever OEM garbage is in there now.

Would a better amp be a necessary upgrade to accompany the new speakers?

Not an external amp necessarily, but a new head unit would help immensely. I really should've mentioned that last post. He might even want to try just switching out the head unit first and see what difference that makes, unless he really likes the stock look for some reason. Stock head units never push that many watts, even my "premium audio system" in my Si could really use a new head unit. Unfortunately my head unit is also my nav unit, so its staying.
Switching out speakers will probably help, but without more power coming from the head unit, they'll never be used anywhere near their potential.

Does anyone have the specification for the stereo system in the 2006 Type S? Power output, peak output, signal to noise etc.?

dont know the exact specs. on the rsx/rsx-s system, but its weak. Best thing for anybody who wants better sound, get a headunit, run components, power with amplifier. Guarantee you will never look back at your stock stuff/premium BOSE shitt. Running speakers through a deck is fine, however dont expect to much, 22-25watt rms. It might still sound better than stock but you'll be surprised what an amp will do.

I don't think it matters what the spec is. If your ear tell you it sounded bad. it's probably is. First, you need to decide whether you're spending a lot of time in the car or not. Then, how critical listener are you. To get a good quality sound you'll need a head unit, multichannels amp, subwoofer and a good pair of componet speaker for the fronts.
I am not up to date on what's good head unit and amps. Someone else in the forum maybe more up to date.
If you're on a budget, the best improvement is to change your speakers. That's usually the weakest point. If you like to play it loud, you'll definitely need amplifier. otherwise you'll damae your speaker.
