The answer is pretty simple..., you just have to look at the size of both SUVs... RX is much smaller than MDX, RX is a 5 people carrier, MDX is a 7 people carrier...
There is not such a big mistery...
MDX: 188.7" x 77.0" x 68.7" (161.5 cu ft)
RX: 186.2" x 72.6" x 66.1" (140,8 cu ft)
In fact, RX exterior dimensions (appart from the length) are more RDX-like than MDX:
RDX: 180.7" x 73.6" x 65.2"
And when it comes to interior volume, again it's more on the CR-V side than MDX
CR-V: 139.5 cu.ft in LX trim, and 137 cu ft in EX trim
In fact, passenger volume is even bigger in the CR-V than in the RX...
RX: 102.5 cu ft
CR-V: 106.0 cu ft (LX) or 103.3 cu ft (EX)
Hope that helped...

I owned a 2001 MDX for 5 years before trading it for a 2005 Lexus RX330. When the '07 MDX comes in the fall the Lexus is being retired.
The MDX has much more spirit and soul... much more of a "drivers" car than the RX. Just a note also is the MDX had no problem carrying 5 passengers and the RX is tight with even 2 adults and 1 child in the second row. (MDX third row even was tolerable for 2 adults for short ride).
Not sure if you plan on towing anything but the RX doesn not handle towing well at all. I have a single jet ski and every bump throwss the RX around. The MDX towed with ease and you didn't even know you had the trailer behind you... smooth.
If you want a comfort ride buy the RX but if you like luxury and performance buy the MDX. You won't regret either car bt it comes down to personal driving style.
Good Luck!

Daniel is right about the size difference. The most noteworthy dimension is probably width. Sit inside an MDX and look to the passenger. They're "over there" somewhere. Sit in an RX350 and the passenger seems like they're right next to you.
The MDX is simply a bigger rig. The benefits include extra passenger and cargo space. The down-side is more weight for the engine to lug around.

Ive driven all 3 versions of the RX, the RX300, RX330, and the RX350. Although they are well made high quality vehicles and have decent space I could never get comfortable an any of them and Im not a big guy. 6' 195lbs.
Driving dyanamics is another issue. Its not a Buick but it "plush" and doesnt give the driver ANY feedback. The steering is very numb and dull, I felt I was driving a dishwasher. The MDX on the other had gives much more road feel and feedback like all Honda products. But Iv e always wondered why the RX sold way more units then the MDX.
You might consider the RDX as well.

Why did you buy an RX330 then?

i am a honda fan so i tried to stay within honda. Steering on RX is very light. i will ask my wife to try seating on RX. as for number of MDX, i believe this is production volume, Honda just can't keep up with the demand on MDX as Toyota has a much bigger production capicaty than Honda. but i can be wrong....

I'm not Dan but I would guess that he was ready to replace the MDX and buying ANOTHER nearly identical MDX was probably out of the question. 6 year model cycles are tough to live with when you frequently update every 2 or 3 years.

I traded my '01 MDX for these reasons:
1.) I had around 110,000 miles and was going to have to sink in around $2000+ for the 105K service, tires, brakes etc... The RX would give me trouble free service until the '07 MDX arrived.
2.) Many of my co-workers have RX's and they all love them... When I test drove it I felt it rode very nice and would be suitable replacement until the a few years into the MDX redesign.
3.) The RX has many features not available in the generation 1 MDX which filled a few voids the MDX had.
4.) Finally the biggest was the price and deal I got onthe RX... I bought last day of month and last day of sales quarter and the dealer was trying to pump up his sales numbers. I drove off in the RX for below invoice with added class 3 hitch and got just under private sale figure for my MDX... couldn't pass that deal up. This was over $5000 better overall deal then the Acura dealer offered for basically th same vehicle I was driving.
But as I have driven the RX over 20,000 miles I feel that it is not nearly the vehicle it advertises. The RX is nothing more than a fancy station wagon or minivan. It lacks the driving feel and passion that the MDX has. Mileage is not any better than the MDX and you really sacrifice space and handling. I could barely fit 2 adults and 1 child in the second row. The MDX easily hauled 7 adults (although the 3rd row only for sort trips).
Over all I like Lexus quality of material over the MDX... nicer leather, chipping of the B pillar by seat belt, and much quieter ride over my '01 MDX.
The MDX was a much better tow vehicle. I have a 800# jet ski and the MDX towed with ease... almost like it was not even there at all.. but the RX gets tossed around with every bump in the road.
I can't wait for my '07 MDX to arrive.... Where are those spy pics??? I have been told by my dealer contact that his Honda rep drove the '07 in Ontario and that they started up production already (seems early to me).
Good luck... sorry for the long winded post!
Dan
