Hey Cy and others (opinion welcome)
Looking at buying a 2005 CRV SE and know that the stock tires are crap. Looking for your opinion on best replacement for stock rims. Stock tire size is 215/65 R15 98T. I don't mind keeping that size but am curious what larger sizes (225/70?) would work as well.
Since the tire size changed for 2005 there aren't many reviews of this size with this vehicle.

Check your sizes again, I thought the 05 went to 16" wheels .

You're correct that's a typo. Thanks. Correct size is 215/65 SR16 98T

The 2 alternative 16" sizes compatible with the wheel and the chassis are:
225/60-16
235/60-16.
Please give me background so I can make a recommendation:
1) What geographical area are you in?
2) How aggressively you drive?
3) Typical highway cruising speed?
4) Average amount of miles driven per year?
5) Since there is a trade-off between grip and treadwear, how many miles do you expect out of your tires?
6) If you had to choose, what would you rather have - sharp steering response or better ride comfort?
7) If you had to choose, what would you rather have - sharp steering response or less impact noise over bumps, tar strips etc?
8) Do you know your current tires are? What have you like or disliked about them?
9) How important of a factor is tread noise at highway speeds? Is a little more tread noise something that will drive you crazy or not really an issue to you?
10) Is your car modified? If so how?
Thanks.

Thanks in advance for your help Ty. I edited your reply to help with the tire selection.
1) What geographical area are you in?
I live on Long Island in New York and travel North to ski so rain and snow are an important consideration. Good all-season tires please
2) How aggressively you drive?
Not terribly agressive but want something capable for challenging driving situations
3) Typical highway cruising speed?
70 - 85 mph if the roads are clear depending on flow of traffic
4) Average amount of miles driven per year?
figure 12000/year
5) Since there is a trade-off between grip and treadwear, how many miles do you expect out of your tires?
45000-60000 miles
6) If you had to choose, what would you rather have - sharp steering response or better ride comfort?
normally sharpness but reviews mention a firm ride with some impact intrusion so comfort might be a bigger concern with the CRV than my Accord
7) If you had to choose, what would you rather have - sharp steering response or less impact noise over bumps, tar strips etc?
see above
8) Do you know your current tires are? What have you like or disliked about them?
haven't bought the CRV yet but know the stock Bridgestone Duelers are crap. On my 98 Accord EX 4cyl I have Bridgestone LS-H which Tirerack helped me pick out last year, they are great - I would love to get the same level of performance (great braking, wet holding and sharp steering) but I'm not expecting the same levels of performance from the the CRV platform
9) How important of a factor is tread noise at highway speeds? Is a little more tread noise something that will drive you crazy or not really an issue to you?
with the CRV others have mentioned noise as a problem so a quiet tire might be better
10) Is your car modified? If so how?
No, only HMC interior accessories and the roof rack
Thanks.

Assuming you've already decided not run a separate set of snows we'd recommend the 215/65-16 Bridgstone Turanza LS-T which is a lower speed-rated, better-wearing, smoother-riding version of the Turanza LS-H.
We want to stay narrow because the narrow tire will "cut' through the moderate and deeper snow you'll encounter. See:

Thanks Ty for your help, when I negotiate a final deal for the CRV I switch the Duelers for the LS-T's and post a review on Tirerack.com. Sorry for not following the standard format, I realize this costs you time. Thanks again.

Hey CY...I have a very similar question. I currently own a 2005 CRV Sport and the road noise is driving me crazy. Looking to upgrade the tires to try and reduce the roar of the road. I have answered your questions below so you can advise me:
1) What geographical area are you in? I live in Australia where open road driving is common. Roads tend to be course concrete w/ mostly dry conditions. When it rains though it can be pretty serious.
2) How aggressively you drive? Not aggresive at all...mostly a family car used around town and open freeway driving.
3) Typical highway cruising speed? 70-85 MPH
4) Average amount of miles driven per year? Less then 12K
5) Since there is a trade-off between grip and treadwear, how many miles do you expect out of your tires? Assuming around 30-50K
6) If you had to choose, what would you rather have - sharp steering response or better ride comfort? Better ride comfort for sure.
7) If you had to choose, what would you rather have - sharp steering response or less impact noise over bumps, tar strips etc? Noise is the number 1 issue.
8) Do you know your current tires are? What have you like or disliked about them? I have the stock tires that came w/ the Honda.....not happy w/ them at all.
9) How important of a factor is tread noise at highway speeds? Is a little more tread noise something that will drive you crazy or not really an issue to you? Noise is number 1 issue.
10) Is your car modified? If so how? I plan to sound deaden the vehicle, particularly around the wheel wells and the floorboards to try and reduce the road noise.
