Hi there,
This is my first post to TOV, I was ecstatic to find this website so I had to hook up fast. My question is regarding the vtec engine. Is it true it should have 160 HP for the b17 engine, and being a vtec, you should feel/hear this puppy kick in at roughly 5k, right?

Hello there!!
I just joined this site to reply to this post.
My 92 GS-R is rated at 160hp and the vtec is supposed to kick in at 5300rpm...so i'm told.
Judgeing from experience this is about right.
92 GS-R's aren't exactly common, you know. Nice to see someone else has one.

Thanks for the replies it really helps having the web sites info. K-Dogg, when you put the hammer down, do you notice a difference in sound or pull at about that rpm? I took a ride in a friend's civic sir and it was obvious once vtec kicked in, with mine however, I don't notice a thing, it just climbs all the way up to roughly 8k, without a change in sound or power.

Let me butt in a bit.... the next generation GSR was similar. There was some change of sound as the secondary intakes opened up, but otherwise the engine feel was flat and even all the way to redline.
In the Prelude, OTHO, the kick of VTEC is very significant. When it kicks in, the tach gets buried and you gotta brace yourself to shift it. It isn't brutal but after driving a GSR it was a shock that the engine could feel so "raw" when VTEC kicked in.
I'd venture so say (IMHO) that this is the case between your friend's SiR and your 2nd gen Integra.
Actually I think the way the Prelude feel is tuned is more in tune with a sport car than the GSR which is more refined.
PS: Did you see Monster Zero? I got most of the Gozilla movies in LaserDisc.

I suppose I can expect this in the future then. I raced my buddy, who has an itegra 1.8 non-vtec, who slowly pulled away from me.
I think his is an 91 or 92 gs If I decide to mod the engine, can you suggest a good way to start? I have yet to get a header and a fast flow converter, what I'm interested in is the difference in performance and truth about cams and vtec controllers.
How about starting from scratch and dropping another engine then (When the cash flow allows of course)? type r's go for about 6500 here ( toronto) if I'm not mistaken.
p.s.To be perfectly honest, no I ain't seen monster zero, I've seen most of them tho'.

Speaking from experience, I do notice a definite increase in power after 5000 rpm. I'm pretty sure I'm not just imagining it either. The thing I notice most about the car is how weak it can be off of the line. It seems to have no power at all until about 3500-4000rpm. I ran it for one run down the dragstrip and ran a 16.7 at about 85mph. I can't remember exactly...I threw out the slip. I was disappointed with that. I totally expected to be in the 15's. I did bog off the line and it took a while to rev up. How could lower end power be improved?
Hey Godzilla, what mods are you planning?

There are so many bloody mods available for a honda it's hard to know where to start! Gonna go exhaust and intake, I already have an K&N intake, but I'm gonna go cold intake and then go for the header and fast flow converter, I recently had most of my exhaust changed to 2 1/4 up to my converter since my muffler fell off, seemed like a good time to start. After that, I'd really like to get cams. What about you? Which mods?

I'm not planning anything too drastic. I'd like a short ram air intake, 17's, and a full Wings West Body kit...however, my funds will just not allow for that right now. It's kind of a sleeper the way it is. Most people don't even know that they made GSR's for G2 Teg's.
