Hello all. Does anyone have any suggestions for winter tires that help in snow and freezing rain? I live in Vermont and so far the snow hasn't been all that bad, but freezing rain is crazy here. I can't even pull out of my driveway some mornings. That could be because I'm still on new all-seasons, but would relatively inexpensive or mid-priced snow or snow/ice tires work for me? Vermont seems to have a few extra seasons, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Muddy Winter, with freezing rain as a transition between Winter and Muddy Winter. Snow/ice tires aside, could I just stud my all-seasons? I can't quite remember what model Bridgestones I bought (I believe they are the second-most expensive) but they are pretty new, with very little wear on them. I don't think I'll be keeping my Legend (94 Sedan) much longer with my Si coming, although it's a possibility, but I'd rather be spend a little money to be safe than be ultra-cheap and sorry.

Locate a Nokian Tire dealer in your area. They make a superior series of winter tires. It is unfortunate that Tire Rack does not carry them. They are available at www.tirefactory.net however. Its getting a bit late in the season though.

I have Pirelli Snow Sports (210 I believe) and I love them. Already on my 3rd winter.
Try www.1010tire.com as well.

lol...not around here...it's barely started.
Wish I was still in Maryland :(. I'd be getting ready to for spring, meaning summer tires.

The Nokian RSI is a full-blown winter tire. The Nokian WR is the only All-Season with the Mountain M&S rating.
The Michelin X-Ice would be a good choice for you as well, but there are lots: Yokohama Ice Guard or Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice.
All these Winter tires wear pretty fast, so they're winter-only.
Tirerack has a number of articles and comparisons for winter tire technology.

Thanks a lot to everyone for the feedback. My girl tells me sometimes the worst storms are in March.

May also want to check out Bridgestone's Blizzak line. Those are the best performing snow tires we carry. I've heard good things about the Nokian brand also, but I have a lot of customers come off of those and into the B-Stones with great results. The tube multicell compound really makes them adhere to snow and ice surfaces. Its the only tire I'll use on my three cars. You can read about them here Bridgestone Blizzak

Many areas get 1/3rd of their seasonal snowfall in March. But this season - who knows?

I put a set of Blizzaks on my '04 Accord before a trip to Vail, CO in December. They made a HUGE difference. I've driven the Accord with the stock all-season Michelins on ice/snow, and the change was almost as dramatic as going from FWD to AWD. Friends made the same trip w/o snow tires and had that white-knuckled look about them. My only complaint with the Blizzaks is a slight increase in tramlining:

Other than that, they were a great purchase. $650, for steel wheel mounted, winter driving confidence.

Canadiandriver.com has a "Winter Traction Test" that is worth reading to get a feel for what works and what does not.
