Hi Neil,
Yesterday I did my car a tire rotation at Walmart. After that I noticed a strong steering wheel vibration at 60 mph or above. When Walmart service manager asked me which pattern I prefer, I chose cross pattern instead of the side-to-side he chose by default. Would that cause the problem?
The tires have only about 5000 miles and they were balanced when being put on my car for the first time (7 months ago). Do they need re-balanced again?

take it to a reputable tire shop and have them rebalance all the wheels.
I bought tires from tirerack.com last week, got cheap and lazy and made the terrible mistake of taking them to walmart to have them mounted this weekend.
things they screwed up;
1) the tires were directional and they mounted one backwards, so it was turning the wrong way.
2) shuddering at freeway speeds, which led me to recheck the torque, and the lug nuts on one wheel was quite loose. Good thing the wheel did not fall off on the freeway.
3) after retightening, the shuddering was still present, so i took it to an america's tire shop to have them look at it. I suspected the balancing was done incorrectly and when they put in on the balancer, the guy told me it was reading off and walmart used the incorrect size wheel weight to balance it.
4) the guy at the tire shop pointed out they didn't change my valve stems (still old and dirty looking) even though i specifically asked them to do so. Also they left a valve cap off.
Take it to a reputable tire shop to have them mounted, it'll only cost a couple bucks more. At best it can save you a hassle, at worst, it can save you from say your wheel falling off while on the freeway.
