Hello all, It seems a Small rock has sent a crack across my windshield. It is a tiny chip yet I now have a 10" long (and growing) crack going from the base of the windshield up through the heater element and it is starting across the bottom.

Two things.
First, Should a Small chip create this kind of crack? I've seen much larger chips not create this kind of crack.

Second, How much should a new Windshield cost? Depending on the cost, we may go through our insurance company.

Has anyone had to replace their windshield yet?

Most insurance companies will pay to fix windshields for a very low cost or even no cost and on your record it's sort of a "freebie" - the claim won't impact your rates.

it's not uncommon for a chip to grow into a large crack - it sort of depends upon where and how the initial chip is formed.
