Looks to me like besides Honda brand SUV's, both Honda and Acura had a terrible sales month for December. I would think with the FMC of the Civic, sales should be much better than flat (+10-15% instead).

That has more to do with production than anything else. December production is about half of other months, as the factories are closed for two weeks. With the shipping issues of the Civic Hybrids delaying their arrival and the Accord hybrid pushed into January, the numbers are not unexpected.

I think everyone but Toyota had a negative month. Being said, Honda can easily has a positive month if Accord didn't perform that poorly.

Read in the papers a few days ago that SUV sales are down across the board for all manufacturers--no surprise given the high gas prices. On the other hand, smaller & more gas efficient passenger cars sales are healthy, especially for Honda & Toyota.

Sales are always down for cars in December, that's the way the business is. Especially during the Christmas season, people are not really interested in buying cars, because they are buying all the hottest and newest electronics and other hot new items for their releatives during the Holidays.

FYI The last week of December is the Busiest week of the entire year, need to spend some money before the end of year, plus Honda seems to have dealer incentives to finish the push and if you notice the increase in "Trucks" Honda had finance incentives to end the year as well.

This chart actually shows month-compared-to-month tho, with Accord down a whopping 31% over Dec. 04.
Here are my excuses:
1. Civic hype
2. People that were really waiting for the 06 Accord already got one by this point
3. Thin incentives (not sure why)
4. People waiting to see how the gas price thing pans out
5. Interest rates up 1.5-2.0 points over last December, and incentives even more (or less)

Plus, I think many people who were interested in the Accord changed their minds and went with the Civic. I know if I were in the market for a new Honda last year, and had to decide between the '05 Accord or Civic, I would've easily picked the Accord. Now however, with the introduction of the '06 Civic model, I would've definately gone with the EX Civic sedan. =)

Plus the competition grew. The new Hyundai Sonata sales shot up 117% for November, and judging by how many new Sonatas I'm seeing on the road, it probably continued that way through December, and taking away sales from the Accord.
I was really expecting the refresh would boost Accord sales.

I wouldn't go as far as saying the busiest week of the entire year, but yes, Honda's incentives do help increase sales at the end of December, and customers love the good deals.

Well, if you are realistic, what was exceptionnal was the sales of past year-s December, which was by very far the best December month ever for Honda, with a hopping 30% increase compared with 2003. And 30% sales increase is something that you don-t usually see in any stablished manufacturer. Actually, I-m quite surprised that this year-s December has been almost as good as past year-s, I didn-t expected it to be so.
Because, btw, December 2003 was also an all time record sales in December for Honda, so it was no lame record.
I don-t remember exactly, but something happened last year that slowed down the whole industry in the months previous to that Dec04, and then suddenly sales of everybody were incredibly up for that month.
This year-s Honda sales are quite good for a December month, the problem is when comparing with something exceptionnal (not usual) which was 2004.
