I was curious how bad is MTBE and ethanol blended gasolines for an engine...I'm out in California, so blends are much much more common here than I would imagine anywhere else...Also, I've heard that ehanol blends kill mpg...I was wondering if anyone knows which companies...besides Shell and Arrco (which post that they do) use either of these chemicals....I was thinking I should just go back to using Chevron...$$$ouch...

As far as i know, its not really bad for your engine. It is bad for yor fuel pump and rubber lines and injector seals and probably your fuel filter and anything else that is not rated for ethanol. You can buy all the seals and a fp and filter that is made to take nothing but ethanol and that should work great. But i wouldnt imagine the stuff you are using has enough in it to really damage anything right away.
Any idea how much is in the blended gasoline? I am curious how they get it to burn at the same rate as normal gas, do they use lower grade fuel to start with and then pep it up with ethanol? I would imagine the burn rates arent exactly the same (but pretty close) so if you wanted to run the blend all the time you might benefit from some tuning.

I live in Rhode Island and I saw something in the news about certain Gas Stations using blends with as much as 10% ethanol. Its all about bringing down the price. They did not mention which grades it was used in though. I posted a question about this a little while back but got no answers. How would a mix like this effect the car? Is 10% high?

I know it will lower emissions a considerable amount, but i dont know how bad it is for all the seals. I cant see it being that bad, may have some adverse affects on things after long term use, but if you use it and just slowly replace anything it might be bad for then you would probably be way ahead of the game and never have any problems. May not have any problems anyway.

Ethanol is in almost every state's major cities. CA was one of the last to get rid of MRBE (It was good, but its a lawyer thing with MTBE and Ethanol is made by the corn growers with a huge Republican lobby!)

Back to the facts, MPG will go down becuase ethanol does not have as many BTU's as gas.

Emissions will go down because ethanol brings oxygen into the gas molecules to burn better

Won't hurt your engine. max concentration is 10% and all engines can handle it without any modifications. No long term issues. HEAT used to get the water out of gasoline is ethanol.

Do not confuse ethanol (made from corn) with Methanol. Methanol will damage your rubber parts.

Gasoline additives are very different. Stay with the major oil companies and you will be much better off.
