Comparing the 2006 stablemates -

Issue: the Civic SI has a limited slip diff and the Acura RSX Type-S doesn't. The engines and driveline are otherwise all but identical.

Given that these are FWD cars, the lack of a limited slip means that when pressed the RSX literally becomes a 1-wheel drive car. Even when driven carefully, this becomes an irratant when driving in the rain. For a performance driver, this would be a major issue in "spirited" driving, and a huge glitch when driving on a racetrack. I've driven a Type-S on a racetrack, and it was a very lousy experience.

So what happens with the RSX in the longer term? Is there any point to the car, does it fit into the Acura lineup, and where is the R model? The Integra R is alive and doing very well in Japan, with more power, a limited slip, big Brembo brakes fr/rr, and a Recaro interior - in short everything that would differentiate the RSX from the Civic Si. The price point would be very different, definitely addressing two very different sets of buyers.

Greetings Jeff! We've met a few times at TWS and MSR. It's been a while since I've seen you around, but you're always entertaining to chat with at the track and a good driver to boot. Welcome to TOV. What are you driving these days? Last I heard, you'd sold the S2000 and were shopping around for something else.

In stock form, the RSX-S leaves a bit to be desired. It can, in no way, compete with something like the S2000 when both are properly driven. And the feel is, of course, very different. I can't call it lousy since I own one and track/auto-x with it. =-) However, I've spent a bit of time tweaking mine with little things like a rear swaybar, slightly stiffer suspension, harder bushings, and an aggressive alignment and it is actually much better. The Type-R model would have cured all those problems and more from the get-go, but Honda won't get their head out of their ass and bring it over.

The Si seems to cure all the woes of the RSX-S and at a better price, while offering more "stuff". I'd jump on it in a heartbeat if I were in the market for such a car and were cross-shopping the RSX-S and Si. If the RSX-R were also available, the choice would be a bit more difficult.

Ryan
