Asking Honda to use my oil for scheduled maint.    (Score: 1, Normal) 08-08-2005 00:23

My wife has a 2005 CR-V and it's getting close to the first scheduled maintenance (10K). I have a 2001 Accord (EX, 4cyl, sedan) that I've been running Amsoil synthetic oil in and I want to get the CR-V started out with Amsoil.

I'm going to drop the CR-V off at the local Honda dealership to have the 10K service done and I'm wondering if most Honda service shops will put in your oil (and filter) if you ask them. Or are they just going to nod their heads and say "sure we'll put your oil in" and just put the regular oil in and take my oil home for their cars?

They probably won't give you any hassle about using oil you bring them. I've heard that some wont use anything but a Honda oil filter without voiding warranty though.

My local Honda dealer does this. I bring the Mobil 1, they do the work + filter. They charge ~$19 instead of the usual $25.

They cannot void the warranty for using something other than an OEM part unless they can prove that the aftermarket part caused the failure. That is part of the Moss-Magnussen act.

Shouldn't be a problem. I've even brought parts to the dealer to use as replacements (wheel bearings, tie rods, etc.) and they've used them. Oil shouldn't be a problem.

You may get a little back talk. I took Mobile 1 in and the idiot told me that Honda oil was better and that if I used anything else I'd void my warranty. Then another guy working there gave him this look like was stoned and said Mobile 1 was better than Honda oil and not to be telling customers they would be voiding their warranty. I never went back. Few months later a friend had to take his car to a different dealership to get is clutch replaced after 15k miles because they said they wouldn't cover under warranty because he might have caused excessive wear on the clutch.

Just did the second oil change on my '04 RSX-S. Mobil 1 oil and filter now on it.

They must have been using some pretty crappy oil there. (I did my first oil change with the dealers dino and OEM filter.) Imediately after the switch to Mobil 1 my mileage went up, and I haven't been driving it any different, heck I took it up to 200kph once on this last tank and I'm still doing better than I usually do.

the clutch is a wear item, like brake pads. unless it is defective, they wont replace it. 15k for a clutch is possible depending on your friend's driving style (high RPM starts, riding the clutch all the time, "power shifting", doesnt rev match downshifts, starts in 2nd gear all the time, etc etc.)

Cept that another dealer did it no questions asked and was shocked when he asked what it would cost. This particular dealership in question had MANY complains about it's repair shop using questionable methodology. (They stated if you EVER used VTEC it voided your warranty)

JMU R1 is 100% correct - dealers can't void the warranty for using like replacement products (asking to install non-specification items is different). They can refuse to use Amsoil or Mobil One but that doesn't encourage repeat business. Technically, they could tell you that you shouldn't be using 10W-30 in one of the newer engines calling for 5W-20 but that's a load of BS especially if you are talking about using synthetic oil. A good 10-30 synthetic flows better in winter than a regular petroleum 5-20 and provides better protection in the heat than a petroleum 5-20. The only thing you may sacrifice is a couple MPGs but that's well worth the protection and I'm not sure you'll even have to concede that. However, I wouldn't recommend drastic oil weight changes in the engine.

Ares & VTEC Inside - regarding the techs. talking about Mobil One being better or worse than Honda oil. The two don't compare. Conventional petroleum motor oil (Group I lubricant) is inferior to Mobil One (Group IV lubricant). Further, you may be surprised to see that Honda's specifically calls for........... Mobil products (regular petroleum based) in its cars according to their parts catalogs. Mobil One is better than regular Mobil oil but I'd recommend a synthetic blend or better yet a fully synthetic oil like Red Line (Group V). It's completely man-made and is superior in all characteristics to other oils. I use Red Line in all my cars (85K on my '03 Accord and running smooth as silk).

I've brought my own synthetic for years, it hasn' been a problem. I stick with the stock filter, however.

OdAccord, you don't have to tell me. You'd just be amazed at how many techs working at dealerships don't really know what they are doing or talking about. I switched to Mobile 1 Super Synth after 7,500 miles. Use nothing else. Very happy.
