Actually most new minivans have gotten a good rating. That is the whole purpose of the IIHS program, for all manufacturers to achieve a good rating. When they started testing, results were all over the place, now, at least in the frontal impact test essentially all manufacturers are getting at least acceptable. The new side test that mimics an suv hitting a car on the side, has revealed (the obvious) that small cars do not offer enough side protection unless they are equipped with side curtain airbags. This will force manufacturers to make them available even in their most inexpensive models. Honda as always is trying to stay ahead of the curve and will make them standard in all models during the next 2 years.

I just will never understand this point regarding small cars and side impact... The performance or larger cars without side airbags are not better either !!! You just have to watch at the Accord or Camry without them.
It is not because an stupid article said that small cars crash performance in side impact was poor that it is true. This is only giving an excuse for simple people to buy bigger cars for nothing.
Have a look to crash protection of the Corolla and Camry. Where's the point on going against small cars ???!
Btw, not a single new minivan has performed IHSS side test so far.

My guess is that minis with side curtain bags will do very well. The main issue is that SUVS overide the side impact protection of cars. Like you I do think the test is rather stupid and pointing out the obvious but it does reflect reality since SUVS are out there. If all automakers used systems such as Hondas ACE this would me a non issue. The problem is not the little cars its the big trucks! They should be pushing as hard as hell for SUV modifications, they are overweight and gas guzzling, lowering their impact height would not be a problem there. On the other hand adding extra stuff to smaller cars increases their weight and fuel economy suffers accordingly.
