I have an '05 RSX-S. I'm a little surprised that the engine sound is louder than the '04s. I think it doesn't sound as good as the '04s and especially compared to my '94 GS-R, which sounded like an INDY car. This car's engine at high rpm is LOUD and BOOMY and buzzy. Why couldn't Honda make it sound better? Is there a way to reduce to boominess and buzziness and quiet it down without reducing power?

You might try a cotton-mesh dropin air filter, like a K&N. It worked on my 350Z to reduce some NVH, I couldn't detect any power loss, but 1 or 2 lost on a Z wouldn't be noticed.
There was a test long ago done on a GSR w/a K&N dropin filter and it demonstrated a gain of .2 secs 0-60, and a very slight gain thru the 1/4. I know some here would be hesitant to use the filter, but if your NVH is as bad as mine was on my Z, I would try it.
You know Acura got the extra 10 hp in the 05 somewhere, and they usually start with intake/exhaust, lowering restriction there. Could you live w/208 hp, if it were quieter? I know I could.

Hmm, I had read that the '05s were still quieter than the '04s on the hwy despite the shorter final drive and higher cruising rpms. Not that it matters, but I prefer my '04s gearing because I do a lot of hwy.
Anyhow, my suggestion would be to attack the intake system as thats where I think most of the noise you are hearing is comming from. A drop-in filter may do the trick or an aftermarket intake.
I think the goal should be to get a lower tone of intake resonance. If you can't affect the overall noise level, changing its "note" if you will could make it less noticeable. I know that sounds a bit contractictory given that the tone changes with engine speed as it is, but you should be able to find something satisfactory.

i doubt an intake is going to make the situation better. on a car where most of the engine "noise" is coming from intake overlap, an aftermarket tube-style intake will only enhance this quality.
i think sound-deadening material is your best option. dynamat on the underside of the hood, on one side or other of the firewall and possibly under your carpets. doesn't 'sound' like an easy task. sorry for the pun

I wasn't suggesting any intake change other than an OE type dropin filter. I agree a tube-style would not be appropriate, dynamat under the hood would help, but is very heavy. I wouldn't use it under your carpet or firewall, but thats just IMO.

I'll look into the drop-in filter. Yes, the boominess is what is really tiring to listen to, it discourages me from revving the engine so high, which is the exact opposite of my GS-R. So changing the note I think would definitely help, and I wouldn't mind or notice a 2 hp drop. Anyway, I can more than make up for that once Hondata releases software for the '05s. Thanks for your help, all.

A couple of things...
1) The '05 has an extra motor mount over the pre-05s. This could introduce more sound into the cabin.
2) The intake camshaft, intake manifold, and exhaust are all larger, which would make the engine louder.
3) A drop-in filter won't change the sound noticeably -- I tried it. But, if you care to experiment, I have a JR Filter I'd gladly sell you for a good price (say, $25+shipping?). I dynoed it for (IIRC) 2WHP and 6 ft/lbs of torque.
