my uncle has been doing research for honda for the past 15 years.. in the last 2 he has been part of a team that reseaches turbo designs.. its only a 6 man team and he said their reseach has no link to the nsx.. they have design a turbo system for a 5 cyclinder engine that uses 2 turbos.. 1-3 on a small turbo and 2-4-5 powering a large turbo that doubles as a alternator and changes the cars batterys.. he said that this easliy can be adapted to a V10.. if this has anything to do with nsx might be a V10 i dont know..

When you think of the M5 V10 with 500 Plus HP, can Honda really afford to be proudly stubborn and not build a v8 or a v10 -- I don't think so. Honda has finally pulled its head out of it's butt and joined the automobile race. Welome Honda!

yea, thats what Honda needs to do, it needs to start building some bigger engines and showing people what muscle really means.... I mean come on, look at the Ford Mustang GT, V8 with only 260HP???? come on the S2000 is half the engine and is 20 HP less...... and if you go by liters, which some people do, were talking 2.0 vs 5.0 and the differences is 20 HP....

remember the TOV test of the new 2.2L engine in the S2000? it said something along the lines of horsepower been well above their rating of 240hp at the wheels!

Sorry guys, but the new stang GT is 4.6l, 300hp and 320 lbft of tq., that's 60 more hp and double the torque of the S2000. The last GT was also 4.6l. You also have to consider that a GT costs about $8K less as well, and I'm no mustang fan.

...and let's not forget that Ford have FINALLY updated the body structure, so that the mustang no longer necessarily handles like a "Rust-stank!"

ok ok ok but lets face it.. domestic engines suck yeah i know like i dont mind domestics but think of it.. vans... honda =3.5L v6=255 toyota = 3.3L 230hp etc etc then you look at dodge van = 3.8L = 215. Ford= 4.2L =201

Cars: Honda accord = 3L 240hp Ford mustang's V6 = 4L 220hp!

As you guys know more leters bigger engine lower fuel economy. Domestic cars always got huge engines making low HP. And domestics arent as reliable heck

I would point out one thing that notyper and a few others have alluded to in some other discussions....this is all driven by economies of scale and mass production decisions. What do I mean? Well...

Consider, for a moment, that Ford/GM/DCX/etc. have (and have had) quite a few very LARGE vehicles over the years. That has driven a need for a certain size/class of engine. That background biases the engines (particularly the middle of the road V6 type) towards the high tq @ low rpm idiom.

This "reality" of the domestic engine world has driven an abundance of large, heavy, compromised engines. Some of the V6's in domestic cars were never intended to work their way into a car...but when you toss around $200M+ figures for building an entirely new engine supply chain...that becomes much more feasible.

Honda/Toy/Nis/Etc. have traditionally focused nearly exclusively on small/mid cars and light trucks. This has driven THEIR engine architectures towards lightweight, higher revving, smaller displacement engines. The only way such an engine can make equivalent power without boost is to rev higher and breathe better.

It just so happens that North America's auto market has driven a convergence of these two engine groups (yes, I'm excluding das Deutch...they're just weird ;-) ). You have the domestics, with old designs and architectures biased towards the needs of mid/large car and medium truck/suv applications...and the Japs, who have a small car background with small car engine architectures that are much better suited to said applications.

Saying that a Mustang GT engine is not as good as a Honda something-or-other engine is pretty suspect. Who defines what is "better?"

A Mustang GT sounds pretty damn good when it roars by...it has a lot of personality...it also surges hard when you stomp the gas pedal and it doesn't care what gear you're in. Try that in a Japanese car...you have to manage the gearbox to make sure you get good oomph.

All the same...a Rustang veggie (V8?) crate sounds awfully wheezy and thrashy when you get it spinning 5k on the tach...that's right when my old 2000 Prelude's H22A would open up and scream!

Well your also comparing the 4.6 to much smaller Japanese engines. Since we are comapring smaller V8's I would have to pick the Toyota/Lexus 4.3 300hp/325lbft against the Mustangs 4.6 unit. The Toyota actually makes more peak torque than the Mustangs (5lb ft) and is smaller and MUCH more refined. So the Japanese can make just as good or better engines that are simular in size.

Another example would be the Hemi against the Nissan 5.6 V8. The Hemi makes about 30 more horses but the Nissan makes more torque at low RPM. I can rememeber a recent SUV test where the Jeep Grand Cherokee (Hemi equipped) and the Nissan/Infiniti 5.6 Q56 nearly had the same 1/4 miles times but the QX4 would easily pass the much lighter Jeep after the 1/4 mile. Again smaller engine but more sophistication. But I would have to say the best American V8 would have to be the LS series by Chevrolet. the LS1/LS2 and LS6 engines pull like 32v engines and are far more compact than just about any multivalve unit of the same size or smaller. The LS6 is actually physically smaller then the Northstar 4.6 in the Caddillacs.

I know for a fact Toyota is developing a "big" V8 for the next "FULL SIZE" Tundra, and it should as impressive as the Nissan 5.6. Not to mention that Toyota has the best V8 in the Craftsman Truck Series. Its actually around 30lbs lighter than the Dodge/Chevy/or Ford V8 of equal displacment, makes a lil more power than all 3, and the castings are MUCH more precise then the other 3.. Honda however needs to at least to make a 4.3 V8 (for NSX/top line MDX/ and the RL) and I dont think we will have to wait much longer. Just my 2 cents.
