To all who's done this, I'm thinking of getting a set of B16 engines and swapping them into both my EK civic and the old accord (yes i'm told it's possible, and seen it too) but in the case of the old 1984 accord at least, I'm told that the dash meter needed to be changed (namely, the RPM meter) in order for the VTEC to work.
Now I don't know about vtec engines swaps, but isn't the VTEC controlled elsewhere instead of by the RPM meter on the dashboard??
I'd like my old car be low profile and stock aside from rims, and as such I'd like the dashboard meters to be stock too. The Civic's dashboard is easily swapped.
So the question is, does the RPM meter need to be in there for the VTEC to work?
Note: i find it more worth it to buy the 2 whole front ends and swapping it into the old car than to get a totally new car simply because of the high prices of Hondas here.

Wow whoever and whereever you heard that from is retarded. Vtec is not controlled by your RPM meter period. It has nothing to do with your RPM meter.

Btw if it was... you can just paint a redline at 4000 rpm so VTEC will kick in at 2000 rpm! better yet.. you can drive your car by moving the rpm meter up and down.

Interesting. I thought that if I used the original RPM meter it'll still tell the correct RPM (which means I can still redline at 8k rpm but on the old dashboard it'll correctly read 8000 but that's the limit there on the old board.)
Anyways, I haven't asked around, i'm sure there'll be a solution to this.

Hahaha no man no you are right it willl show the correct rpm. i'm just trying to make a point vtec and tach do not go together!

rpm's/tach-----nope.
but i guess it is possible that you may need to swap the gages, but what is certain is that if your computer can't read a pulse from the gauges or the transmission to "see" that the car is moving it will NOT engauge vtec....
i do not know wether or not it needs a certain speed...perhaps just to see that the car is indeed moving. it all depends on how your Vehicle Speed Sensor is connected: to an axle or through the speedo cable or whatever
any doubters can take there speedo undone and keep waiting for that vtec to kick in - cause it won't on the older models such as a b16a
