Hi,
I am very happy with my new 2004 Accord, but I really want a smoother ride. I was told first to check the tire pressure. I was told they somewhat over-inflate tires on new cars to 40psi when it should be closer to 32psi. If this isn't the problem, what tires are recommended for a smooth, quiet ride. The Michelins they give you when you buy the car, well, you can feel EVERY bump. I want the same, if not better performance, but a much smoother ride.
Thanks in advance,
Paul

What are the OE tires? Most Accords are fitted with touring tires, they are pretty smooth riders, so it can be tough to find tires with better rides.

The car came with the Michelin Energy MXV4 tires.
I am thinking about replacing them with the GoodYear Assurance ComforTred. Heard very good things about these tires.
Can a 2004 Accord handle a wider tire? The Michelins are 205 width. Can I go to a 215 or 225 width??
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Yes, according to what Cy has told others about their 03 and 04 Accords. 225s should be fine on your stock wheels, or you can go to 7" wide wheels. Cy is the final word on this, and I would like him to comment further.

An extra 8 psi will definitely stiffen up the ride so getting back to Honda tire pressure recommendation should take care of the problem.

We have test fit the following sizes on the car:
215/55-16
215/50-17
215/45-18
225/45-18
225/40-18 (Must run higher air pressure)
We haven't test fit 225/50-16 but it should fit given the dimensions of this tire are roughly the same as that of the 225/40-18 size.
The closest compatible size in the Comfortred would be 215/55-16.

Hi Cy,
I just responded to you in another forum.
Thanks so much for your attention to this. I appreciate it.
So am I misunderstanding your response or are these ComforTred tire sizes you have in stock? Do you have any personal thoughts on ComforTred? Any other tire I should consider?
The Michelins I have, now that they are at 32 psi are actually great! But I've always been interested in the most comfortable ride possible. It's something I am willing to pay for, within reason.
Do wider tires improve handling? My apologies for these silly questions, but ever since getting my new car I realize that a car is much more then oil and gas. (My last car was a 1987 Accord Lx-i).
Thanks again for your attention,
Paul

The Comfortreds are available in the stock 205/60-16 Accord V6 size but they're not available in the sizes that we generally use for testing on our BMW 330CI coupes so we haven't tested yet.
Bottom line, most of the ride issue that you experienced was caused by the high air pressure so I would not recommending switching to a different tire especiallly since we haven't been evaluate whether or not Goodyear has been able to increase ride comfort without compromise cornering and steering response.

Having owned a 97 Accord with Michelin MXVs, I seriously doubt you could do better with the Goodyears. Your story is akin to the Princess and the Pea.
Wider tires can improve handling, but their construction and the materials used are better measures of how well they handle. Check out Tire Rack's Performance categories for an in-depth anaylsis of tire performance, its a good read, if you are truly interested.

Thanks for all your advice guys.
Now with proper inflation, my Accord is driving much smoother and handling the road quite impressively.
