Wax for Painted Plastic Panels???    (Score: 1, Normal) 05-24-2004 21:22

Does anyone know of a wax that is easy on the paint applied to Honda / Acura bumpers? I used Mother's California Gold Carnuba Cleaner Paste wax on my '98 'Lude. I loved the way it worked on the painted metal surfaces. However, it seemed to be a little to harsh for the bumpers. The paint on both bumpers developed a rough texture in ~ 2 years time. I don't want the same thing to happen on my new RSX Type-S. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Ray

Ray,

I heard that Zymol wax is the best however one (small)container of it can run as much as $200.00CDN.
I personally use a British product called AutoGlym which is intended for Aston Martins, Jaguars etc on my Honda.
I do believe they have a separate product for bumpers as well. Check it out.

it *might* be a problem with adhesion. paint would stick differently to metal versus plastic. but i don't think it's the type of wax you're using. i use the same polishes on my bumpers, mirrors, door handles, that i do on the rest of the car and have never had an problems.

the bumpers do pick up a lot of abuse being so low to the ground. you might want to try a clay bar on them to lift out any grime and residue that's been imbedded in the paint. this also takes off wax so be sure to wax after you clay.

stoner products have a product for bumpers and other plastic products. i used to use the above mentioned products till i went to a product called 5 starshine.com it works great no more waxing and you do not have to repeat the process for years except to put a rejuvinater on once a year.product goes on great with no residue unlike wax and nothing sticks to the car as its main ingredient i believe is ptfe. good luck

You should be careful what wax you use because it can and probably does contain abrasives in the wax. In fact, that's why Mother's calls that wax a "cleaner wax" because it "cleans" your paint by having abrasives in it, and it scratches your paint on the microscopic level. Painted plastic panels have a thinner layer of paint on them, so nearly every perofessional detailer will tell you not to use abrasive car wax on plastic panels. Better yet, just throw out the abrasive car wax altogether and use one that doesn't contain abrasives. However, those brands usually tend to be more expensive. Usually the wax will say "contains no abrasives" or something of that sort.
