1st Why does an HIGHT FLOW improve engine power?
- If you consider the engine a BIG air pump.. it's just a question of BREATHING.. for EX.. if you try to stick a hose on your mouth and start breathing, then you will stay alive... but will you run a mile like you did before... NO! SO yes if does improve. Depending on the engine capacity it will give you more HP. VTEC Hondas use it better because at hight RPM you really need air! The gain can range from 1% to almost 6% depending on RPM, capacity and type(aspirated, or turbo) - it's a question of flow!
2nd Why do some air filters perform better than others?
- Because it's just not a question of quantity! You need FLOW. Sponge air filters produce a turbulent air flow, and inside an engine you only whant turbulence inside the combustion chamber. SO cotton air filters provide better flow with less turbulence, creating a better air current. This has a minor but existing advantage.. The air pipping heat's with engine work, so if your air flow is perfect only the outer RING of air will be heated, providind the engine with cooler air.
The best filter is the ful cone design or the double-half-cone design. Check Akimoto, greedy and HKS for one of these.
After instaling your filter you must insulate piping with some fiber and aluminium sheet, protect the filter from hot air form engine and water on rainy days, while also getting clean fresh air form the form of the car to it.. that can be muth more tricky than most people thing and is vital to the transformation. Remove the older air filter box because it tends to HEAT!
Important - The engine is a Air pump.. so if more air is getting in... MORE should go out.. check for a complete exaust line, and hight power spark plugs to get better results!
