Hello,
Can anyone tell me if replacing the original air filter by a K&N replacement air filter will really increase power and improve gaz mileage on a 2001 Accord 4 cyl.?
If so, does anyone have actual numbers??
I have been hunting the net but cannot find any numbers.
thanks

Don't expect a K&N filter to increase gas mileage. You can expect it to have a longer lifetime because you just have to clean and re-oil it every 15K miles or so making it more cost effective than the OEM paper filter over the lifetime of the car.
Some things to look for in an intake:
1. Price: do you really want to pay that much?
2. air intake location: will it be taking in hot or cold air? Cold air intakes work quite well, but you have to consider if you are ever going to be driving through standing water.
3. installation: make sure it installs cleanly. nothing is rubbing and the mounts are strong.
4. and of course dyno plots: has it been documented to make additional power?
Make your own decision on what you consider "best". It's going to be up to you.

Yeah, I heard some "sponge" filters don't filter as well as others. That's got my kind of concerned because the Weapon-R Air filter I have on my car is a sponge filter or so I'm told. If I replace it, other than the pricey K&N, what other kinds are there, and which ones have the best of both worlds for the money?
Or all they all the same?

Basically, the filter is letting more air into the car. The sensors in your car will notice this and adjust the fuel accordingly giving you more hp. Under normal driving conditions, you should get better gas mileage. Unfortunately, if you drive like most of us, redlining at every shift, you will probably get worse gas mileage. So, to answer you question, if you drive like a grandma you will get better gas mileage and if you drive like a bat out of hell, it will be worse.

could u elaborate why the fuel economy improves with K&N when driving like my grandma? I thot the more air necessitate matching fuel increase even at < 2K rpm?
thanks,

Hai...
just my two cents of comment.
I think a replacement filter like K&N is much better than the OEM filter in your car. However if you are looking for a vast improvement in the car, i am afraid you will not able to feel it. It is in some way make your engine runs more efficient since it is less restrictive and the engine can convert the fuel and the air more efficiently.
I would think to get best out of an aftermarket filter is to combine it with an aftermarket spark plugs (eg. NGK) and exhaust system (eg. Spoon).
At this time a good air-filter will be more important compared when it has standard plug and exhaust.
I hope this help.

I had one in my Civic, and made a little difference. No gas mileage improvement, but the engine definately breathed easier at high rpms. I never did a dyno, so I don't know the exact hp improvement, but I would guess 1-2 hp.
I figure a K&N filter is a good investment since you never have to replace it, and they can be had for most cars for $30-45. It won't increase the noise level of the car and will probably give you a couple ponys.
An intake system is for someone who is looking for max HP gain, willing to invest $150-250, and willing to put up with more engine noise. AEM seems to be everyone's favorite, but it all depends on the application.

1st Why does an HIGHT FLOW improve engine power?
- If you consider the engine a BIG air pump.. it's just a question of BREATHING.. for EX.. if you try to stick a hose on your mouth and start breathing, then you will stay alive... but will you run a mile like you did before... NO! SO yes if does improve. Depending on the engine capacity it will give you more HP. VTEC Hondas use it better because at hight RPM you really need air! The gain can range from 1% to almost 6% depending on RPM, capacity and type(aspirated, or turbo) - it's a question of flow!
2nd Why do some air filters perform better than others?
- Because it's just not a question of quantity! You need FLOW. Sponge air filters produce a turbulent air flow, and inside an engine you only whant turbulence inside the combustion chamber. SO cotton air filters provide better flow with less turbulence, creating a better air current. This has a minor but existing advantage.. The air pipping heat's with engine work, so if your air flow is perfect only the outer RING of air will be heated, providind the engine with cooler air.
The best filter is the ful cone design or the double-half-cone design. Check Akimoto, greedy and HKS for one of these.
After instaling your filter you must insulate piping with some fiber and aluminium sheet, protect the filter from hot air form engine and water on rainy days, while also getting clean fresh air form the form of the car to it.. that can be muth more tricky than most people thing and is vital to the transformation. Remove the older air filter box because it tends to HEAT!
Important - The engine is a Air pump.. so if more air is getting in... MORE should go out.. check for a complete exaust line, and hight power spark plugs to get better results!
