Timing Belt    (Score: 1, Normal) 12-23-2003 13:53

I bought this 96 ls about one year ago. It now has 59K miles on it. I heard the timing belt needs to be changed at 60k. Will it last to 80 or 90k? I had a Ford escort with over 135k on the original timing belt before I sold it. That car was only three years old, all highway mileage. This car is over 7 years old with more city mileage. Would that make a difference in making my decision on when to have the belt changed?

Thanks for your help.

60k is real early to change the timing belt. I believe its recommended to be changed at over a 100k. Like 110k? I'm not sure on the exact mileage. You don't want to wait for it to break so 90k would seem a reasonable time to change.

Since I have my owner manual out. I will confirm that it is recommended to replace timing belt and inspect water pump at 105k miles. I'd do it sooner just to be safe.

Same here, bought a 96 GSR little over a year ago. I just recently changed the belt at 80K because somehow it got loose and was chattering like crazy. I figure if i'm going to go in there i may as well change it.
Oh, don't wait too long, honda/acura engines are valve intrinsic (sp?) so if it breaks you are going to have a lot of bent parts in your engine, and that is one headache you really don't want! Last i checked Fords aren't so its not as bad if a timing belt breaks in a Ford.
