Does anyone know, or care to hazard a guess, what the effects would be on VSA, ABS and odometer if we opt for a higher tire profile, e.g., 235/60 R17?

After posting my question, I reread the Owner's Manual. It states several times that you cannot change tire sizes without affecting VSA and ABS systems.

Just out of friendly curiosity, why go higher on the profile? I can understand going +1 or +2 on the wheel size (lower profile) for handling considerations.
If you're looking to fill the wheel well gap, you'll be much happier with good quality lowering springs. A mild drop will look quite nice and improve handling to boot. Higher profile tires will markedly hurt handling, in addition to introducing speedo error, etc.

Not knowing what you're trying to accomplish, so I'll guess it may be for snow tires??? If that's the case I've gone to 205-60-16 snows (on RL rims) and have no issues with ABS, VSA, spedo or handling - I obviously don't do any "hero" driving in the winter. As a direct comparison to my 99TL, on the very same winters, indicates the 04 is at least as controlled as the 99 was - meaning very stable for winter driving.
PS
The 205 tires are way better in snow/ slush than the EL42s were - absolutely no tendency to push or slide.

Theslick1, Golf Nut:
I should have mentioned my objective in my original note. I am trying to soften the ride and am willing to sacrifice some handling characteristics.
Thanks.

If that's the issue, I would suggest you maintain the original size but go to a "T" rated tire. There are lots who will say this is going to dramatically affect the handling, but my own experience shows it just softens things up a bit with the side benefit of increased tire mileage (I have a 95 Z28 and went from Z to V to H and finally T rated tires until I found the combination that provided the driving comfort I was looking for) without giving up much in real world handling. I actually gained in tracking since the Ts are more resistant to following ruts and grooves. Overall my Z is much more driver friendly now. I'll probably look for similar tires when it comes time to replace the EL42s (which won't be very long judging on their rapid wear).
